Unions Team up to Protest Harvard Layoffs
03 Dec 2010
About 25 people gathered in Harvard Square Wednesday evening to protest Harvard University's treatment of its clerical workers. Union members from Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers and Industrial Workers of the World, among others, as well as concerned community members, signed a letter to Harvard president Drew Gilpin Faust and took part in a noisy demonstration in Harvard Yard.
Harvard has a long and shamefuls history of mistreating its employees. Some examples include Joan Frankel, fired after a quarter-century of perfect performance reviews, and Ravi Raj, who was subjected to racial slurs by his Harvard supervisor and fired when he filed a discrimination complaint. Speakers at the rally, including Frankel and Phebe Eckfeldt, repeatedly pointed out that Harvard likes to get rid of older workers in order to avoid the expense of their retirement benefits and seniority-based compensation.

HUCTW member Geoff Carens attempted to deliver the letter to Faust's office, but was denied entry to the building by Harvard police.
