YOUTH CELEBRATE JUNETEENTH
Youth for Human Rights Florida joined the festivities of Juneteenth in St Petersburg this past weekend.  The festival demonstrates citizens' and city officials' commitment to preserve freedom, justice, and equality.
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.  It was on June 19, 1865 that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.  This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863.
At the festival members of Youth for Human Rights Florida educated others on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which includes, Human Right #1 “We Are All Born Free and Equal” and Human Right #4 “No Slavery”, as they played games and gave out youth-oriented DVDs and booklets about the 30 human rights.  They also collected petitions to encourage human rights education in schools.
As the Vice President of Youth for Human Rights Florida, 16-year-old Fabian Argueta, stated, “We had a lot of fun teaching people about their human rights at the festival using a bean sock throwing game to depict Human Right #24 ‘The Right to Play.’  This attracted people from all ages (including the elderly, who were very eager to win the organic snacks) who also learned about human rights, leaving with information on their human rights and a prize (if they won).”
Youth for Human Rights Florida, a Chapter of Youth for Human Rights International, educates teachers, students and community groups about our 30 human rights with an award-winning educational program.
The program consists of a youth-designed DVD of the 30 rights as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “The Story of Human Rights” a powerful DVD that defines human rights of the past and today, and the evoking music video “UNITED” conveying the message of anti-bullying and human rights.  The Human Rights Department of the Church of Scientology is a proud supporter of Youth for Human Rights International.
