Immigrant Students Hold Vigil Against Anti-Immigrant Amendments in Senate
Budget

Boston- Student Immigrant Movement (SIM) leaders and students join forces
with local organizations to hold 24/7 vigil in front of Massachusetts
Statehouse to ask budget conference committee to remove Anti Immigrant
Amendments from MA Budget due June 30th.

The MassHope 2011 vigil began Monday, June 20th, 2011 and will last until
the amendments are removed from the budget.

SIM Leaders and supporters will hold a press conference on Friday, June
24th at 12 noon to release a statement on the amendments, which threaten to
make Massachusetts a hate state and incite racial profiling. The amendments
include provisions to mandate e-verify for small businesses with public
contracts, restrict public housing to heads of household who are documented
and mandate that the Attorney General continue to receive complaints about
undocumented workers and report to ICE.

The press conference will be followed by lobby visits to meet with key
Representatives and Senators to remove the amendments from the final budget.

SIM held the MassHope vigil last June during the budget discussions for 19
days, and were successful in removing the amendments from the Budget. The
MassHope Coalition was formed with 40 local organizations, which included
MIRA, Centro Presente and other key organizations.

SIM is a statewide immigrant youth-led organization based in Massachusetts.
We identify, recruit and develop leaders in local cities and towns who are
invested in improving their communities through relational building,
leadership development, electoral organizing and using both strategic and
motivational campaigns that build movement.
