Occupy Boston Plans Protest in Financial District
28 Sep 2011
Modified: 01:11:48 PM
Inspired by the recent Occupy Wall Street protests (, local organizers are planning a similar demonstration in Boston. Last night about 300 people gathered on Boston Common for a general assembly to discuss occupying a location in Boston to protest the ongoing pillage of the world economy by corporate interests.
Participants spoke at length, although not always on topic, about their interest in the occupation and their own ongoing projects. Following the speeches working groups formed to hash out the details of legal support, food, tactics, medical support, signs and flyers, and other logistical matters. Working groups reported back to a reconvened general assembly for approval of their plans. Decisions were made largely on a consensus basis, both within working groups and in the general assembly, with facilitators directing the discussion and making sure everyone got a chance to speak if they wished.

It was decided to occupy a park in Boston's financial district next to the Federal Reserve building at 600 Atlantic Avenue, but participants failed to come to agreement on the starting date of the occupation. A second general assembly to settle this question is scheduled for tonight, September 28, at 6:00 PM, also on Boston Common near the gazebo.
