NYC Medic and First Aid Trainings
09 May 2004
10 hour first aid training: May 14
20 hour street medic training: June 4 - 6
Sliding Scale. No experience necessary.
THE 10-HOUR WORKSHOP CURRICULUM- saturday may 14, 10 am to 8 pm location: queens rainbow center (30-74 steinway st. take g, r, or v to steinway st., use broadway exit, walk two blocks "forward" upon exiting. center is on 2nd floor, above 1-800 mattress)

Political activists face serious health and first aid challenges. Our standard 10-hour workshop is an introduction to protest first aid and aftercare. It will prepare the student to act as an affinity group-level medic and health resource for their community. The workshop is built around hands-on practice and role play, with breaks and lunch time built in.

Students who already have advanced first aid training will want to take this course as we cover many things that are specific to protest health care. People with no first aid training will learn valuable first aid skills they can use anywhere, not just at protests. We will also talk to students about how they can continue their training. Expect to have a lot of fun!

You will learn:
How to be a health resource for your activist community
Basic protest safety for you and your affinity group
Chemical weapons (pepper spray) decontamination
Herbal remedies and aftercare
ABCs (Scene survey, scene management, Airway, Breathing, Circulation, spinal cord precautions, triage)

Dress as if you were going to a protest. Sensible shoes and raingear required; we may get you wet. Sandals are a no-no.
Bring all the other gear you'd bring if you were going to a protest.

Bring a small, squirt-top water bottle that's still sealed.
Bring a lunch and snacks for yourself.
Bring your friends.

This class has a sliding scale: $0-$40.

20-HOUR WORKSHOP CIRRICULUM- friday evening, june 4th; saturday june 5th and sunday june 6th all day
location: queens rainbow center (30-74 steinway st. take g, r, or v to steinway st., use broadway exit, walk two blocks "forward" upon exiting. center is on 2nd floor, above 1-800 mattress)

this workshop is as above, but it covers a wider range of less common (but possibly more serious) healthcare situations which may present themselves on the street. this workshop is geared to those who are interested in assuming the role of a marked medic at protests and actions or being involved in medic organizing. open to beginners or those with advanced first aid training, emt training, etc. also a good way for medical professionals to get involved in street medic-ing as we cover first aid from a street perspective, as well as herbal remedies and psychological interventions not common to all medical professions. so...come one, come all, and be ready for lots of hands-on learning.

stuff to bring and sliding scale as above. any questions please email nothingirl78 (at) hotmail.com
