Kick off Pride Week 2012 with the women of Voices Rising who will present a concert of heart and humor, entitled "Welcome Out: Pride, Potlucks, and the Power of Song," on Saturday, June 2 at 7:30 pm at the Eliot Church in Newton, and Sunday, June 3 at 5:30 pm at First Church Boston in the Back Bay. From Broadway to the blues, and with musical selections from Lady Gaga, Cyndi Lauper, the Flirtations, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, and Cris Williamson, this concert will touch your soul, tickle your funny bone and fill you with pride.
Lauded by The Boston Globe for its infectious enthusiasm, the 28-voice women’s chorus is led by Artistic Director Leora Zimmer and Accompanist Soohee Moon. A native of Montreal, Zimmer graduated from McGill University with a degree in music theory, and earned two master’s degrees from Yale University. In addition to conducting and singing, Zimmer has composed, arranged and co-produced three CDs.
“This concert is a perfect way to celebrate the beginning of Boston Pride week,” said Zimmer. “With classic gay anthems like ‘I Am What I Am’ and the modern-day ‘True Colors’, we sing a little bit of everything for proud LGBT supporters young and old.”
Moon completed her classical composition degree in South Korea before studying piano performance at Berklee College of Music. She is the music director at First Congregational Church in Belmont, Mass.
Founded in 2004 upon feminist principles of community, inclusivity, activism and education, Voices Rising is a proud member of GALA Choruses, Sister Singers Network, and the Greater Boston Choral Consortium.
