New Issue of NYC Indypendent Now Available
17 May 2004
The Abu Ghraib prison scandal has shocked the world and even some Americans. In the new issue of The Indypendent we take a disturbing look into the mind of one of the interrogators, examine the dehumanizing treatment of prisoners both in Iraq and here at home and hear the latest on a pair of “enemy combatant” cases being considered by the Supreme Court.
We also have the latest on the uproar over electronic voting, the growing support in Congress for launching pre-emptive strikes against Iran, a first person account of life in the Israeli army, a review of Ronald Aronson’s new book on the political and philosophical disputes that ruptured the friendship of France’s two most well-known 20th Century intellectuals as well as stories from around New York about AIDS housing activists, the latest landlord power play at the Rent Guidelines Board, new community service requirements for public housing residents, resistance to military recruiters in the South Bronx, the renewed battle in the Lower East Side over the future of the Charas/El Bohio community center in the Lower East Side, the news on RNC preparations and much, much more! See PDF.

The Indypendent is distributed throughout the City. To get involved, call 212-684-8112 or email imc-nyc-print@indymedia.org or just come to one of our weekly meetings (Tuesdays 7 p.m.) at our office on 34 East 29th St. We are a volunteer-based organization. We are looking for writers, editors, proofers, designers, illustrators and techies. We are also looking for point persons to help us expand our culture section to include music, movie and theatre reviews.

We also just published the second issue of El Independiente, our new Spanish language paper. To get involved, call 212-684-8112 or email imc-nyc-espanol@lists.indymedia.org.
