March Against Mass Incarceration Invades Downtown

A 200-plus strong march against mass incarceration made its way through downtown Boston today, stopping at the Suffolk county jail and the Department of Mental Health.

Organized by Boston Feminists for Liberation, the march was intended to raise awareness of the US prison-industrial complex. Speakers at the two stops discussed the plight of transgender prisoners, incarceration of those with mental disabilities, and the practice of shackling pregnant prisoners during delivery, among other topics. Prisoners at the Suffolk jail on Nashua Street were reportedly enthusiastically banging on their windows, although this is not apparent on the videos linked above.

Marchers took the street for the entirety of the event, in spite of one suggestion from the cops that they stay on the sidewalk. Police presence appeared to be limited to two vehicles following the march. No one was arrested.
