The Realities of U.S. Foreign Policy with Paul Atwood
23 Jan 2017
Join CCB on Sunday, January 29th, 11 am for a presentation by author, Pat Atwood

Myth, ignorance and wishful thinking guide the understanding of many American about their government’s relations and actions in the world at large. This presentation will argue that from the beginning of the colonial period the trajectory of the U.S. has been aggressively expansionist-territorially, politically and economically-while claiming to serve democracy, self-determination and human rights. Our inability to see our actual history through the fog of myth, widespread ignorance and ideology inhibits our understanding of the present and blinds us to growing dangers of another global war.

One of the original founders of the William Joiner Institute for the Study of War and Social Consequences at UMass-Boston, Paul Atwood served in the Marine Corps, and became active in antiwar efforts and veterans issues after discharge. He is semi-retired from the faculty in the American Studies Department at UMass Boston. He edited the Joiner Center publication Agent Orange: Medical, Scientific, Legal, Political and Psychological Issues and recently co-edited Sticks and Stones: Living with Uncertain Wars. He has published articles on the consequences of warfare, including in Public Health and War and articles on the Vietnam War in Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia. He contributes to the on-line journal Counterpunch. He is author most recently of War and Empire: The American Way of Life
