During World War II, approximately eight thousand of the civilian employees at Charlestown Navy Yard were women--they represented over fifteen percent of a workforce engaged in building, converting and repairing ships for the war effort. Polly Kienle discusses how women changed the Navy Yard during their service there and what this means to us today.
