There must a typo here on the announcement. The DNC doesn't start until Monday the 27th.

    Monday the 26th. Sorry.

I've been trying to figure out whether to join up with A.N.S.W.E.R. I'm leaning toward getting in touch with them. Anyone have any advice?

How are you going to 'march on' an event that does not event begin until the following day? Are you going to march on an empty fleetcenter?

And if I come to this event will there be ANSWER-WWP-IAC peace police there?

Bob, I would avoid having anything to do with ANSWER. I've tried working with them in coalition in the past and . . . well, let's just say the consensus among most Boston-area organizers is that they do not play well with others. They're a front group for the highly sectarian Workers' World Party. WWP and its past front groups (the International Action Center, the National People's Campaign, etc.) have taken all sorts of screwed up political stances in the past. They've been apologists for Saddam Hussein and Slobodon Milosevic, they supported the Chinese government's repression of the students in Tienamen Square on the grounds that the students were counter-revolutionaries (damn funny definition of counter-revolutionary if you ask me), and . . . well, they started off splitting from the Socialist Workers Party in the late 1950s because the SWP opposed the Soviet invasion of Hungary--which WWP supported. They're messed up.

    Bob,

I would suggest that you check out ANSWER and make up your own mind as to whether or not you want to work with them.
Re: July 25 National March on the DNC

indeed, you should go check them out for yourself. see articles by ANSWER/WWP at:

    bob,
you should visit them at http://www.answerboston.org or call or stop by the office to chat when someone's there. the politics of a lot of the major anti-war organizations in this country have been seriously blown out of proportions unfortunately by a lot of folks who just want to cause trouble. i've worked with answer and the iac a lot over the last few years and honestly, you are not going to be sucked into some cult of people who are supporting hussein or the tienamen square repression, like a lot of people here would like you to think. answer is made up of a whole lot of organizers from all kinds of contexts, and you will meet people who have been involved in the struggle for a long long time, and young people who are just getting started. and believe me, if you ask they will absolutely talk honestly with you about the politics of the organization and what struggles and movements they support.

it's too bad a lot of folks in boston assume that everyone is some kind of dupe who can't make up their own mind, can't distinguish between serious over-simplification and lots of history, or can't agree and disagree with people but still organize on common goals anyway.
Re: July 25 National March on the DNC

There's no harm in checking them out if you want, I suppose, just go in with your eyes open. As for ANSWER being a coalition--my understanding is that, while there are some real live groups in the coalition, most are other front groups for WWP. And the coalition is run in a pretty top-down fashion by people associated with WWP. The problem is that ANSWER tends not to be upfront about their connections with WWP. And some people seem to really refuse to see ANSWER's sordid positions on some questions. They've never come out in support of Hussein or Milosevic, but it wasn't hard to see that they supported them if you read between the lines. They would say how wonderful the Iraqi welfare state was before the first Gulf War without ever even touching on the repressive aspects of Hussein's regime. That amounts to apologetics. From protests I was at, this position was pretty obvious to the casual passer-by. Unfortunately, some people on the left refuse to see this because of an attitude of blanket acceptance of everyone on the left--never mind, the fact that WWP/ANSWER has a history of trying to use coalitions for their own ends and screwing over other groups, not accepting anyone else as legitimate partners in activism.
