Demonstration Against Police Brutality:
In Solidarity with People’s Protest In Cincinnati and
Call for Justice in Boston
at Boston Police Headquarters

On Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at 4:30 pm, concerned citizens, students, community groups and representatives will be gathered at the Boston Police Headquarters (1 Schroeder Plaza) to protest the recent police killing of Timothy Thomas in Cincinnati, along with the police killing of Ricky Bodden in Dorchester, MA. The people of Boston and surrounding areas will show solidarity with the people’s protests in Cincinnati, as well as dispel the myth that Boston can be used as a national model for community- police relations.

Racial profiling, police abuse of authority, police brutality, and police killings occur all too often in Boston as well, but there has been no mechanism for justice for the people in Boston who suffer at the hands of these injustices. Boston remains one of the few major cities in the nation that has not established a civilian review board, and has no mechanism for police accountability to the community.

On December 27, 2000, Ricky Bodden was shot in the back of the head and killed by a Boston Municipal police officer. Like Timothy Thomas, Ricky was unarmed. Like Timothy Thomas, Ricky Bodden was a victim of racism, and unchecked abuse of power. The story is all too familiar across the country. Here in Boston, citizens have organized to demand a stop to the killings, to have the officer who killed Ricky be tried in a court of law, and to establish a community review board. Now they are also putting out a message to the country in support of the demands for justice in Cincinnati.

The people’s rage, frustration, and urgency in Cincinnati are equally felt in Boston. Not one more death will be tolerated!
