Hormel Slaughterhouse Blood Mist Paralyzing Workers
12 May 2018
How ironic that the USDA was founded in 1906 partly in response to the furor created by Upton Sinclair's description of the
agony of pigs at a Hormel plant in Minnesota. In 2011 Hormel was once again in the news, because its workers are being paralyzed
by the inhalation of blood mist, some of it brain blood mist, in their Austin Minnesota slaughterhouse.

'on a wagon bound for market lay a pig with 2 mournful eyes'
Upton Sinclair's description in The Jungle
The shriek was followed by another, louder and yet more agonizing..for once started upon that journey, the hog never came back. One by one the men hooked up the hogs and slit their throats. There was a line of hogs with squeals and lifeblood ebbing away.. until at last each vanished into a huge vat of boiling water (some still alive). The hogs were so innocent. They came so very trustingly. They were so very human in their protests. They had done nothing to deserve it.
“One could not stand and watch very long without being philosophical, without beginning to deal in symbols and similes, and to hear the hog-squeal of the universe.... Each of them had an individuality of his own, a will of his own, a hope and a heart's desire; each was full of self-confidence, of self-importance, and a sense of dignity. And trusting and strong in faith he had gone about his business, the while a black shadow hung over him, and a horrid Fate in his pathway. Now suddenly it had swooped upon him, and had seized him by the leg. Relentless, remorseless, all his protests, his screams were nothing to it. It did its cruel will with him, as if his wishes, his feelings, had simply no existence at all; it cut his throat and watched him gasp out his life.”
Over a century later,
From an understated, long and very powerful article in Mother Jones about the Austin Minnesota Hormel (QPP) slaughterhouse,
"Garcia had gotten on at QPP only 12 weeks before and had been stuck with one of the worst spots on the line: running a device known simply as the “brain machine”—the last stop on a conveyor line snaking down the middle of a J-shaped bench [DC] called the “head table.” Every hour, more than 1,300 severed pork heads go sliding along the belt. Workers slice off the ears, clip the snouts, chisel the cheek meat. caption TK Matthew GarciaThey scoop out the eyes, carve out the tongue, and scrape the palate meat from the roofs of mouths. Because, famously, all parts of a pig are edible (“everything but the squeal,” wisdom goes), nothing is wasted. A woman next to Garcia would carve meat off the back of each head before letting the denuded skull slide down the conveyor and through an opening in a plexiglass shield." The article goes on to explain the inhalation of brain blood mist.
Lindsay Rajt as reported in https://www.opednews. com/articles/Slaughterhouse-workers--Dy-by-Lindsay-Rajt-080529-380.html
'The “head table” at the Quality Pork Processors slaughterhouse in Austin, Minnesota, is not a place of honor. Until recently, it was where workers cut up pigs’ heads and shot compressed air into their skulls, causing their brains to come tumbling out. At least 18 employees who worked the head table have developed a mysterious neurological illness as a result, with symptoms ranging from weakness and fatigue to acute paralysis.'
Is it also ironic that the USDA, founded to prevent worker injury and animal cruelty, has been dominated by the meat industry for decades.
Sonny Perdue is yet another promoter of animal flesh. Ann Veneman, USDA Secretary, was mentored by the American Meat Institute's Lyng before going to UNICEF to pollute their world food program. Dan Glickman, former Iowa governor, biggest pig murder state, was also a USDA Secretary. The USDA has suppressed news of Mad Cow, Mad Pig, Mad Chicken,
Mad Milk etc. in the US.

Recently Ryan Zinke, avid trophy hunter, raised the price of national park entrance while reducing the grazing fees for
megabutcher cattle and sheep ranchers. The livestock industry causes drought, deforestation, because the animals pull up
and chew sapling trees. If Zinke were serious about fighting fire as he claims, he would cancel grazing on federal lands.

Should not JBS Swift, Brazilian owned and world's largest slaughterhouse butcher of animals, Tyson's, Cargill (which recently sold a pig slaughterhouse to JBS)
and others be investigated for similar worker paralysis?
