Two workers crushed to death at Michigan granite supplier

Sterling Heights police say 30-year-old Benjamin Allen Welch of Warren and 53-year-old James Jones of Shelby Township died in the accident Monday afternoon at the business called the Stone Warehouse.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration said the two were using an overhead crane to move the slabs off of an A-frame rack, but as they did, slabs on the opposite side of the rack fell over, creating a domino effect that caused several slabs to fall onto them.

Sterling Heights Fire Chief Chris Martin said the men died instantly. He says the slabs weigh about 1,000 pounds each.

Arriving firefighters did not have the equipment to lift the heavy material from the victims. First responders called the Macomb County Technical Rescue Team and three nearby businesses for assistance.

“We knew this isn’t their job, but we definitely needed their help,” Sterling Heights Fire Department Chief Chris Martin said. “One guy said, ‘If that was me trapped in there, I would want someone to get me out.’ No doubt about it—their help was super beneficial.”
