Anti-War, Gay Groups To Protest at Kerry Fundraiser
01 Jul 2004
Angry at his party’s attempted co-optation of their movements while offering little in return, anti-war and gay rights groups will protest at a fundraiser for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, 7:30 PM, Thursday, July 1 at the Civic Opera Building, 20 N. Wacker Drive, Chicago.

The protest may be perhaps the first in the country to attack Kerry from the left, presaging the Democratic National Convention at the end of the month.

The initiator of the protest, the Chicago Coalition Against War & Racism (CCAWR), notes that Kerry has signally failed to offer any meaningful improvement on President Bush’s Iraq policy or attacks on civil liberties.

“We have here a man who voted for the USA PATRIOT Act, who voted for the Iraq invasion, and whose idea of cleaning up the mess is to send 40,000 more troops and keep his mouth shut while his Democratic colleagues actively plan to reinstitute a draft once the election is safely over,” said Andy Thayer of CCAWR and the other main groups promoting the protest, the gay rights Equal Marriage NOW coalition and the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network. “As a gay man who has worked with others for several years now to win equal marriage rights for our community, I’m doubly insulted that Kerry would presume to think he can have our votes while being opposed to our equal rights.”

While Kerry has said he opposes the anti-gay Federal Marriage Amendment, he has also said he opposes gay marriage. In the days immediately following the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s ruling in favor of equal marriage rights, many gay rights advocates were incensed that Kerry’s campaign loudly denounced the ruling. Kerry pledged to support a statewide anti-gay constitutional amendment, which would effectively destroy equal marriage rights in the one state where they’ve been secured.

Let's overthrow the bastard! WE don't have to settle for him or any other sellout.
