20 Apr 2001

From the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs:

The Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs wishes to thank the community of Akwesasne for staying away from the demonstration yesterday. This helped reinforce to the protesters, that they did not receive an invitation from the community at Akwesasne.

We are pleased that everything went well and control was maintained in a peaceful way.

From the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs

Greetings to the FTAA Protesters:

We hope this notice finds you in good health and spirits.

We are the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs. We are the traditional council for the Mohawk Nation. We are part of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy that pre-exists the United States.

On Tuesday, April 17, we met with the FTAA protest organizers. We are glad to finally have a chance to address your group. Some of the demonstrators had a good mind to see our culture and our people in a way that was different from what had been presented to you in the past.

The community was relieved that you respected their wishes and decided not to use Akwesasne as a portal into Canada. Because many of you took an alternative route, the demonstration was smaller than originally intended.

(A big thank you)

Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs
