quebec update: alive and alone
22 Apr 2001
where's your solidarity?
i woke up early, happy to get off the hard gym floor, to search for a ride home to boston. the gym was empty when i passed out but now it's full of aching bodies and gases which fill the whole gym. outside it drissles soothing my burning face and as i watch city workers cleaning up the carnage from hours before i wonder if the rain is a sign. these streets were clean yesterday; full of non-violent protesters buying food and sitting in the park listening to techno. i've seen a fier for a rave here at 11pm last night, and from the left over barracades, broken glass, dented metal, and spray paint i can tell someone crashed this party. anyway, i enjoy this quiet moment.
when i left imc last night the front hall of the building was declared a medical area and the police line outside was peering in through the glass. a revolving croud of about 50 people were locked in the double glass doors and more were locked outside. the gases from their clothes filled the air causing some of the upstairs occupants to evacuate. with my eyes and skin burning i put my gear on and waited locked between the set of doors with a small group. we booked the first chance we got realizing gases had settled thick in the valley; where the rave was to happen last night followed by another show-down in the morning.
but as i walked into imc i realized the fight is still on. reports are coming in: there were 50 more arrests this morning (400 yesterday), several injuries, and a handful of showdown spots. i still don't have a ride home. to get people across the border labor had to agree to return last night - with or without everyone. there were 70,000 people in the streets yesterday and i wonder how many are left in quebec. the protests was broken up and i lost the group. i was proud to march in solidarity with the unions yesterday; but now as they approach boston i'm wondering if they lost something too. if you see them, please ask them where their solidarity is.
