Yellow Ribbons
10 Aug 2000
a solidarity action that EVERYONE can do
The arrests, jailings and abuse of the R2K protestors are travesties and expose america for what it really is: not a democracy, but rather a terrorist state.
People around the county are outraged, and while many of us are sending money to R2K Legal and calling Philly officaials to help the cause, its difficult to show our solidarity with the prisoners. The solidarity rallies in Philly look awesome, but are out of reach for many of us.

i propose that we tie yellow ribbons around trees in cities accross the country (and in philly). Yellow ribbons have been tied around trees in wartime to show solidarity with our "heroes" on the battlefields, why not use the same symbol to show solidarity with true heroes, not killers of wars, but activists who dared to speak up against injustice and jailed for it?

When american hostages were taken in Iran in 1979, yellow ribbons were tied around trees then too. The jailed activists in Philladelphia have been taken hostage by their own system; i think that the yellow ribbon is very appropriate.

Another injustice regarding the arrests in Philly is the pathetic media coverage. While the Inquirer is printing articles about the hearings, i haven't seen any articles (other than on Indymedia) that address the horriffic conditions that the protestors are experiencing inside the jails. If trees were covered with ribbons, we'd be making a statement that couldn't be ignored; it would probably recieve media attention.

This is just an idea. The ribbons could stay up until our brothers and sisters who are sure to be arrested in LA are released too.
