Anti-War Prez Candidate Ralph Nader Speaks At Harvard On Friday, July 23
18 Jul 2004
The U.S. anti-war movement's independent presidential candidate, Ralph Nader, will be coming to Boston on Friday, July 23 to speak at the Harvard University between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m..
If you're a Boston area anti-war Movement activist who thinks it makes no moral or political sense to vote for a pro-war presidential candidate who opposes U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq, supports the Patriot Act and apparently favors re-introduction in 2005 of some form of military conscription (under the "universal national service" codeword), then you might be interested in coming to the Harvard Science Center-Hall C on Friday, July 23, between 4:30-6:30 p.m., to hear Ralph Nader speak about why he's running for President. Local speakers on community struggles for peace and social justice will also be at the anti-war/anti-corporate event.

The flyer for the July 23 Ralph Nader rally at Harvard states:

"Tired of broken promises from corporate politicians? Well, Ralph Nader is running for president independent from both parties of big business. Finally--a presidential candidate who will stand up for the millions, not the millionaires!

"Nader is currently polling as high as 7% nationwide and 12% among young people, but with your help, we can make these poll numbers go up. Come to this rally, bring your friends, and get involved!"

So if Nader is the anti-war movement's candidate, is the Reform Party the anti-war movement's party?

I'm not trying to be flip, and if Nader was really trying to build a coalition that reached those who weren't on the traditional left, I'd be impressed. But so far, he seems to be running on the ego ticket...
Fuck Nader

Your boy Ralph is poised to help further entrench the neo-con fascists in DC. If Ralphie doesn't bail from this bullshit race you may be casting an absentee ballot from some internment camp in the mid-west in 2006.

Are the neocons as entrenched as you say? Even the Economist called for Rumsfeld to resign and many pundits think Bush would have a better shot at re-election if he dropped Cheney. Also, how come the RNC won't be featuring a neo-con? The neo-cons were a disaster for the U.S. They have all but been completely discredited by the Iraq adventure and the social upheaval that came with it (one million marched on April 25).

Anyway, if they are so entrenched its only thanks to the support they have gotten from the Democrats. Rather than voicing the outrage of millions of Americans who marched for peace and justice in the last two years, the Democrats voted for war, organized support for war, and helped legitimize the neo-cons' policies at every step. With nearly 50% of the seats in Congress, the Democrats could have stopped the war, stopped the Patriot Act, and, as Fahrenheit 911 points out, it would have only taken one Democratic Senator to stop the racist theft of the 2000 election.

Depite the fact that almost 42% of Americans call for an immediate end to the occupation, Kerry calls for adding more troops to Iraq. Kerry has said that he is not opposed to the neo-con strategy of pre-emptive war. Kerry's economic plan is to give corporations a 5% tax cut. Kerry has also admitted that he is will to apoint anti-choice judges (although he did not specify if he would appoint them to the Supreme Court).

If you want to get Bush out of office, by all means vote for Kerry. If you want to build a real alternative, vote Nader and help expose the possiblilties for a powerful independent political movement of youth and workers that can effect a real change of course in this country.

oh, and I agree that Nader's opportunistic acceptance of the Reform Party ballot line is a mistake, especailly since it gives Democrats one more weapon to slander Nader. However, Nader did not compromise his anti-corporate, anti-war program.

And I don't know -- Nader, maybe he has a big ego. I don't know him. But i think the ego argument is weak. The significant thing about Nader's campaign is that it is appealing to millions of disaffected Americans. Nader is polling 6-7% nationally, 12% amongst 18-30 year olds, 8% amongst women, 8% amongst Latin Americans, 10% amongst African Americans, and 24% amongst Muslims. Nader is giving expression to an organic movement of millions of working people who want an alternative that represents the millions and not the millionaires. I appeal to Mass Green Party members not to be sidelined from this movement by Nader's determination to run as an independent. We need you!
