Boston Phoenix Owner Worth $169 Million
12 Aug 2000
Is Hip Corporate Capitalist Mindich Ripping-Off Boston's Counter-Culture For Profit?
Boston Phoenix Owner Stephen Mindich, the 78th-richest person in the Boston area, is now worth over $169 million, according to Boston Magazine (May 2000). The same magazine also noted: "Since he started the alternative newspaper Boston After Dark in 1966, Mindich's empire has risen to include the flagship Boston Phoenix, sister weeklies in Providence, Worcester, and Portland; the magazine Stuff and Stuff@Night, WFNX radio; a printing company, the Internet personal service advertising and telephone personals services for newspapers. Mindich also owns two large buildings on Brookline Avenue that would be needed for the new Fenway Park, which he maintains are worth far more than the $8.7 million calculated by city assessors."

Boston Magazine also estimated that the combined personal fortune of the two Boston Establishment folks who own Fidelity (and its Community Newspaper Co. chain of weekly newspapers such as the Boston Tab and the Cambridge Chronicle)--Abigail Johnson and her father Ned Johnson III--now exceeds $11 billion.
