"Stonewall" Democrats "Regret" Protest for Same-Sex Marriage

Same-Sex Marriage Group To Protest At Gay Event

(Washington) An organization calling for same-sex marriage is calling for a protest at a gay sponsored event during the Democratic Party convention this month in Boston.

Stonewall Democrats, the Human Rights Campaign, GLAD and other groups are holding a social night at a Boston gay nightclub July 26th., the group that fought the FMA over the internet, says it will picket the event because a number of Democratic Party delegates will be attending.

The organization is opposed to Sen. John Kerry's support for amending the Massachusetts Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, although Kerry is opposed to a similar federal amendment.

"Rather than forthrightly saying that the civil rights of millions of Americans should be defended, most Democratic politicians have treated our equal marriage rights as at best, an unfortunate 'diversion' in their election campaigns," said Andy Thayer, National Action Coordinator for

In addition to Kerry, other leading Democrats in Massachusetts are in the forefront of the move to amend the state constitution. The proposed amendment could be put to voters in 2006.

In addition Tom Daschle, the Democratic leader in the Senate, avidly courted the religious right: "Marriage is a sacred union between men and women, the group says.

"These attitudes are an insult to the humanity of every Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered person in this country," said Thayer. "Can you imagine the NAACP endorsing a candidate who opposed legal equality for African-Americans?"

Dave Noble, the Executive Director of National Stonewall Democrats said he regretted the planned protest.

"We need the activists of DontAmend to be united with us as we plan for the challenges ahead." Noble told

"I understand their frustration but we need to unite to work for same-sex marriage."

The protest will be at 8:30 PM, Monday, July 26th in front of the Avalon nightclub, 15 Lansdowne St., Boston.

How about protesting the fact that the blue collar worker is getting the shaft? Less pay, longer hours and more stress?
I don't hear a damn comment about the shrinking ranks of labor.
Everyone wants equality. Where the hell is the equality for the "peon" in the workforce?
Okay, in Massachusetts, marriage got equality.
Now, start bitching about pay, retirement, work week hours and benefits! All that I mentioned is top priority to me and millions of others!

There's usually plenty of labor protest news on indymedia. Usually union-led protests though.
