Franken, Huffington, Hightower highlight July 25 forum
22 Jul 2004
Al Franken, Arianna Huffington, Jim Hightower, will highlight a July 25 forum challenging Democrats to live up to Paul Wellstone's progressive vision
BOSTON – A panel honoring the memory of Senator Paul Wellstone will feature radio personality Al Franken, well-known author Jim Hightower and nationally syndicated columnist and author Arianna Huffington.

Panelists will address what the Democrats Party must do to live up to the progressive vision that the late Senator Wellstone personified. Wellstone had a well-earned reputation for standing up for working and poor people. He was tragically killed in a plane crash in October 2002.

Other speakers include noted author Barbara Ehrenreich; social critic and author Frances Fox-Piven; SEIU Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger; Steelworkers Union President Leo Girard; Brooklyn Congressman Major Owens; Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner; and former Wellstone campaign manager and Executive Director of Wellstone Action, Jeff Blodgett.

The event will be held on Sunday, July 25 at the Old West Church, 131 Cambridge Street (corner of Staniford Street, near Government Center), Boston from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.

Tickets may be reserved by calling Jobs with Justice at (617) 524-8778 or go to https://secure.ga3.org/08/MARoundtable.

The forum will benefit two local social and economic justice organizations, the Union of Minority Neighborhoods and Massachusetts Jobs with Justice. The Union of Minority Neighborhoods organizes communities of color for change and power. Jobs with Justice is a coalition for workers' rights composed of more than 70 grassroots Massachusetts organizations. Learn more about these groups at: www.unionofminorityneighborhoods.org and www.massjwj.net.

Won't a lot of those folks be turning up elsewhere around town for a lot less money? Franken is at a Harvard Bookstore event, Hightower and Piven are at the Social Forum, Chuck Turner is everywhere...I hope their fundraiser goes well here, but it doesn't really compare to other stuff going on during DNC!
