5 yr moratorium on GMO's in MA?
30 Apr 2001
we have an amazing opportunity to do something that has never been done before in the U.S. have a 5 yr moratorium placed on the release of GMO crops in this state.

Last week, this did not seem likely, but due to excellent
organizing and expert testimony from the likes of Sheldon Krimsky and Ruth Hubbord, this has become a very real possiblity (oh, and also a very shrewd representative, Senator Pacheco who happens to like corn).
Right now the legislature is reviewing two bills pertaining to the regulation of Genetically Modified Organisims (GMOs).
HB3385 an act reletive to the liability
of genetically modified food and HB2207 to ammend the
agricultural and markets law in relation to genetically modified crops.Make no mistake about it, there is a lot of industry money backing the defeat of these bills and they were out in strengh in the Massachusetts legislature last week. The legislature could do the easy thing and refer the statutes back to the federal level. But they also appear to be willing to "take a leadership role" according to Pacheco, if the citizens demand it. In other words, they are not going to stick their necks out if we do not make a lot of noise.

WRITE, CALL & FAX BOTH YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND SENATOR PACHECO and tell them to take a leadership role on this issue and institute a moratorium on GE crops and to support the liability bill against damages from GMOs.
