More Harassment of Cooks
26 Jul 2004
Modified: 12:52:29 AM
For the third time in two days, cooks with the Frida Bus and Seeds of Peace were harrassed by police officers in Jamaica Plains on Sunday night July 25, during the People's Party.
At around 7pm, cooks with the Frida Bus and Seeds of Peace were harassed for the third time at a site where these groups and Food Not Bombs have been cooking food for the DNC protests. Four Boston Police officers entered the parking lot where the Seeds of Peace Bus and Frida Bus are located and proceeded to push by one cook and illegally search the Seeds of Peace bus. The police claimed the busses and cooks had no legal right to be in the lot, although there is written permission from the land owner to use the lot for the week. One cook attempted to produce the agreement, but instead was commanded by the police officers to sit down while the officer in charge searched the Seeds of Peace bus. They did not allow the cook to call their lawyer and ignored requests for a warrant and objections to the search. After 5 minutes another cook came to the lot and began filming the police officer's actions. One police officer told this cook that it was illegal for him to be filming and to be on the premises. He then proceeded to grab the cook's hands and force the camera down. After a few minutes more people, including a legal observer, arrived and the aggressive demeanor of the police subsided dramatically. The police allowed one cook procure a copy of the agreement from the bus, which they then questioned the validity of because the agreement did not include any mention of monetary compensation and was not notarized. (When a lawyer was later consulted, the cooks were told that the polices' objections were not legally valid). The police left, once again telling us they would see us soon.
This harassment came after a day of harassment on Saturday, where police called in Hazmat, FBI, Secret Service, Boston Intelligence, the Fire Department, the Office of Homeland Security and sniffy dogs to investigate propane tanks used for cooking. They stole five propane tanks and have not yet returned them. Later that night, another posse of police returned and called the fire department to investigate empty food grade plastic water tanks. (see previous posts for more information on these incidents).

Are there any photos or vide of these events? Also, did anyone think to get the names & badge numbers of the police? Finally, I'm pretty sure you have the right to ask for a signed receipt from the police of anything confiscated. You might want to consult the lawyers on that.
What are you cooking???

I thought you didn't have any propane???

Can you give the hungry protesters some idea of the menu on offer?

I will be very interested to find out what haute cuisine is on offer and how you are cooking it after all your gas was removed for testing...

We could answer this with a protest campaign and/or a post-convention boycott campaign aimed at catering companies feeding the Dems. If we can't eat, they can't eat either.

In WWI, each side's mess halls were within range of the other side's heavy artillery. Result? Nobody ever shelled a mess hall so as not to be eating nasty field rations themselves that same night.

Please get a copy of the geneva convention and remind the police that it is a violation to wage war against a civillian population. It worked in San Fransisco during the Biotec Convention we were able to get our food back and was followed by appologies from the squad leader.

Yes, this really sucks, but why didn't you obtain a videographer and legal rep to hang out around the bus? If people are going to make a big deal about this we need some video and a lawsuit.

If the police keep this up, people will just have to resort to more extreme tactics, which will just suck for the cops.

Every time the cops come in they should be intimidatingly surrounded by protesters. Not touched, just quietly surrounded with a large number. Make 'em sweat.

Did anyone offer the police some vegan donuts?
