Spat Upon, Threatened, We Stood for Palestine
07 May 2001
Who would have thought that two people armed with nothing but cardboard signs and kaffiyehs could cause such distress and discomfort to hundreds of flag-waving Israel enthusiasts?

We stood for Palestine... reply
07 May 2001
I just read Ali Abunimah's article "SPAT UPON, THREATENED, WE STOOD FOR PALESTINE". Thank you Ali. It was well written and believable. Thank you for not slandering Israel or preaching moralities, but allowing us to make our own judgements based on your experience.

It is a shame that people act so badly. Jews, Americans, cops... etc, etc. Who doesn't? It seems as if it has more to do with being human than any one nationality or race. There are as many Arabs and Muslims who would behave as immaturely if I were to peacefully demonstrate at their rally.

Ultimately, I think we are all wrong, and yet all right. We are justified in our fear and anger, but our behavior is generally inexcusable. Israel does oppress the Palestinian people. The Palestinians condone and encourage terrorism. Israel uses excessive force. The Palestinians don't even acknowledge Israel's right to exist. It is no wonder we miss-trust each other. It is no wonder we are at war.

And yet, all our actions are inexcusable...
