Police will never stop Notting Hill Carnival (London)!
28 Aug 2000
The Notting Hill Carnival is now close to its 40th anniversary, and represents a triumph of the black community over their oppressors.
If you're wondering where the idea for Reclaim the Streets began, look no further. This was the original !
In the 1950s, newly arrived black people, mostly from the Carribean, had been enduring open racial hostility from the establishment, culminating in a riot in 1958, one of several examples of where black people were prepared to resist the police and other racists if pushed too far,[ as Brixton was to witness in 1981.]
The carnival appeared soon after, as a positive response by the people to the situation they found themselves in, and ever since has asserted its right to exist, and flourish against all pressure.
The police prowled like hyenas around this mass protest, sometimes trying to close it down, some times trying to contain it or dilute it, and always trying to misrepresent it in a criminal light but to no avail. There can be very few people in London under 40, of any ethnic origin, who have not visited the carnival. A victory for all people !
More recently, the regime is attempting to 'infiltrate' the Carnival ; the BBC, the 'Voice of the Empire', gives a more ostensibly balanced coverage, whilst giving air time to the Anti-Carnival Watch [a grim faced local landowners group] while the Prime Minister tries to cast it in chauvinistic terms: ''Notting Hill is the biggest and best carnival in the world'' says he, clearly claiming credit for it, when he'd close it down tomorrow if he could.
But then, he knows he cant ! Long live the Carnival !

The authorities in London are now considering new ways to break up the Carnival. Stay tuned for more updates
new political tactics against the carnival
06 Sep 2000
Since 1997, a new kind of christian populist regime has been in power in Britain via the Labour party. True to any christian movement, it has demanded absolute loyalty with no appreciable benefit for the people as a whole. Even party dissidents, such as the newly elected mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, refuse to make a clear break with Labour, and effectively extend its hold. It is through this Livingstone that the regime will attempt to plead, hector and bleat to the community, and be sure, the police and party will be on hand to see he does the job to reduce or abolish the carnival. Thats the plan, anyway.
The carnival covers a large ground area in west London, during the last weekend of august when it is held, and in doing so encompasses some of the richest properties (Holland Park) and the poorest
( Ladbroke Grove) in the entire city. What the police do is to fortify the rich bits with cavalry (yes, seriously ) and large divisions, attempting to push the predominantly black carnival goers to the pooer areas north of the Westway road, where there are almost no coppers to be seen whatsoever, and where afetr a day of being pushed around, tempers get frayed, people start to get tired, tempers snap, and THIS is the main cause of any crime you may have heard of, and which always gets mentioned.
I saw at least one 'cavalry charge', and a case of a resident turning a hosepipe on the people, without being reprimanded. .
