Pregnant Governor's ability to serve in question.
14 May 2001
Governor Jane Swift, who is pregnant with twins, is being brought before the Massachusetts Supreme Court for questioning regarding her ability to serve as governor while in this unspeakable condition.
Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift was unexpectedly hospitalized on Tuesday due to complications related to her pregnancy. Having had a scheduled meeting the following day, Swift went out of her way to phone in (rather than simply miss the meeting) and has been rewarded for her efforts with a Supreme Court hearing to discuss the constitutionality of her leadership while pregnant.

This scheduled hearing and these accusations bring into sharp focus the double standard for men and women in US politics: one the one hand we have Dick Cheney being elected as Vice President of the United States just days after being hospitalized for major, life-threatening heart problems which his campaign team took great pains to gloss over, yet few dare question his ability to lead based upon this physical condition. On the other hand, we have Swift, who was from the beginning openly female and capable of bearing children, in fact already a mother, the victim of plain old sex discrimination.
