Re: 3:14pm: 10 Buses of riot cops dispatched to FSZ?

I took an extended coffee break and spent the last hour around Canal Street and the Free Speech Cage. A solid line of black-uniformed, helmeted riot police blocked Canal just beyond the north entrance to the Cage (so you could not get to The Fours bar or D'Angelo's sub shop).

Inside the Cage, around 3:35 pm, several people attacked the east fence with bolt-cutters, making three large holes. Unfortunately, they only got as far as cutting the inner fence before the police took the bolt-cutters away. The outer fence remained unmolested. I didn't see any arrests or violence, so I think the protesters voluntarily surrendered the bolt cutters to the police after cutting their holes.

Someone set up a tape or CD player with a choir singing "We Shall Overcome" in an endless loop, and set this up next to the Cage's microphone. This seemed to have a calming influence on everyone, and kept people from yelling incoherently into the mike like they did on previous days.

This was my favorite sign of the week. Someone held it up right in front of the line of riot police.
