Well if you so called "anarchist" could actually have a peaceful demonstration the police would not have to protect themselves. Also, nice job by the freaky bike messengers yesterday trying to disrupt traffic in an area that had been shut down to traffic. Morons. |

I hope the protests at the RNC are bigger... and I think they will be, for obvious reasons. Let them try to keep New Yorkers in a pen! We'll let the world know that while we were intellient enough to protest Kerry continuing the war, we are also intelligent enough to know who the biggest and original enemy is - the ruthless cabal in the current administration. Ben Franklin said "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." Wait till you see the police state at the RNC. Then help us all show GWB what Mr. Franklin meant. |

Looking at the uniformed troops and the black "Darth Vader" costumes I can just FEEL the LOVE.
Juxtapose this message with the phoney Democratic Convention posturing that this is the party of the people. |

Who was in charge of security? The Darth Vader outfits look to me like a continuation of the police state policies of the bush cabal to me. It's their fearmongering and suppression of free speech that laid the groundwork for the BPD to think that these draconian measures might be needed. The repugs wanted the world to think that this much was needed, when in reality only the current administration actually has to protect itself from a revolutionary protest. I don't think Kerry is all we would want, but he is better than a fascist. I hate that the current policy for a major event is a police state, but I don't blame the Democrats for that policy, I blame the policymakers. |

you obviously didn't listen to Kerry's acceptance speech last night.
this kind of police state was brewing long before the Bushies came to town and none of the democrats who came into power did anything to stifle it.
if kerry gave two shits about the working class of this country, if he was any better than Bush, he wouldn't have allowed his fucking party to be in the center of Boston. no one was able to work, people lost wages, contracts were snuffed, local businesses bled money all week and saw probably the worst sales in a long fucking time because the democrats got freebies from major corporations all week and went to chain restaurants they were familiar with.
fuck the democrats. |

"It's their fearmongering and suppression of free speech that laid the groundwork for the BPD to think that these draconian measures might be needed."
Then how exactly do you explain Seattle? Or A16? Or the 2000 RNC? Or the 2000 DNC?
These police-state measures have been in place long before Bu$hCo took over. That's not to say they haven't gotten worse over the past few years, but you definitely can't blame it all on bush.
The fascist police state is bipartisan. Don't expect it to get better if Kerry wins. |

I do expect it to get better, and I KNOW it has a better chance of getting better under Kerry than it would under Bush. Look, we have a choice - perhaps it isn't the best choice we could hope for, but there is NO DOUBT who is the lesser of two evils here. I know you want to make your points, but generalizations such as "none of the democrats who came into power did anything to stifle it" just isn't true. Even some repugs realize this is nuts.

Begin Quote
"Members of the U.S. House, including those on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Select Committee on Homeland Security, sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft urging him to drop the federal criminal prosecution of Bursey.
The letter signed by 11 members of the House, including Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, states, in part: "As we read the First Amendment to the Constitution, the United States is a "free speech zone." In the United States, free speech is the rule, not the exception, and citizens' rights to express it do not depend on their doing it in a way that the president finds politically amenable."
The American Civil Liberties Union, on behalf of four national advocacy groups, has filed a lawsuit in federal court charging the Secret Service with a "pattern and practice" of discrimination against protesters that violates their free speech rights. The suit seeks to ban the Secret Service and local police from confining protesters to areas away from the view of public officials and the press. "
End Quote
Now, I know it isn't direct action, but action within our system IS ACTION. It's not as headline grabbing as protest, but it has the ability to create sustainable change from within.
I listened to the speech live. I then re-read the speech. I then re-read it again. And I saved a copy to teach my children what a real statesman is if he continues through his presidency this way. Do I trust them? Oh Hell No! I plan to watch them like a hawk, but I KNOW the democrats will be better than the repugs. |

ever growing police state? gimme a break. i hardly ever see police in my every day life travels. just because some police show up to a protest does not proove that we are under an 'every growing police state'. in fact, about the only time i see police is at protests where i am glad to see them.
as an idependant local store owner, i don't want my windows busted in and am grateful for the police in situations where someone stupid will use any excuse to loot or cause damage to their neighbor... |

no protesters are going to be smashing in the windows of locally owned, independent businesses. If you knew anything about this movement, you'd know that. If you operated a starbucks, however...
if your windows were to be broken, it would be stupid kids who have no idea what "anarchism" is about, or people trying to rob the place, which about 99% of the time has nothing to do with politics.
also, if you were on boston common on tuesday, you'd understand. it wasn't even a protest or a rally and yet there was a helicopter circling below 600ft w/a sniper rifle hanging out of it aimed at the people on the common. Imagine riot cops busting up a peaceful county fair. |

you know for sure it's "an ever growing police state" when people think nothing of "just a few police showing up at a protest": that's not "just a few", that's whole squadrons of them, of all description, federal, state, local & 'special', to intimidate the hell out of anyone rash enough to want to exercise their basic Constitutional rights - if you can accept that and the concrete and razor wire "free" concentration pen so carefully conceived and constucted, you're well on your way to abdicating those rights voluntarily... and that's even scarier. |

The fact that the Republican govt. ponies up so much money for the DNC also proves democracy is an illusion in the states. |

Get used to it people . . . this show of police presence is but a dress rehearsal for the coming days, when the people start to form a critical mass of opinion based on the truth of what is going on right now. Remember the Democratic Convention in 1968(Chicago) . . . the Commission to investigate the riots concluded that it was a police riot. And this was a government investigation under a Republican administration! If and when US troops/police are unleashed on their own fellow citizens, I am sure we will see a gigantic change of heart on the part of many law enforcement people and no-nothing citizens who take what Bush and Co. tells them as gospel. It is so ironic that these police in Boston are so armed to the teeth to face down people protesting for a more PEACEFUL world. It is a very sad irony that I am sure has our founding fathers squirming in their graves! |

sacred citizen is a shill. Most violence in protests have been attributed to under cover officers dressed in plain clothes. They are on assignment to create havoc, in order to shut down protests that the Federal Government disapproves of. By the way people, we live in a Constitutional Republic. This is not a domocracy unless you like the way the Romans ran their government. Remind everyone that we are a Constitutional Republic, including your congress people. |

an an ancient authour, polybius, I write for posterity whether it is 20, 30 or a thousand year into the future. this is what governments do. if you look for certain indicators and it will always be the same etc., they do not have to tell you the truth, but you can be acertain once you have understood what to look for, you can arrive at their real intention. polybius wrote about the punic wars between carthage and rome. it is a very big hint to read his books, it has much information and is still revelant to current modern affairs. the police state is no surprise. the real issue when will the next major disaster comes and will the population believe the propaganda again. it time to arrest key players in the government for the sake of avoiding more wars.

reality, the country will not get better under Kerry. Come on, both Bush and Kerry are Skull and Bones. Educate yourself on Masonic orders like Skull and Bones, and Masonic Orders ties to Israel. The real enemy this country faces is Israel. Not the Muslims. Educate yourself about Mossad and 911. Support Jews against Zionism!

Burma in 1988 comes to mind. Man, Hitler would be so proud of America, if he were alive. We are achieving what he failed: Imperial domination, suspension of civil liberties, and the Americans are accepting it! Just replace the word "Jew" in Mein Kampf with Arab, and you have America's Foreign policy. Long live the Gestapo! Of course, weaponization is peace! war is peace, freedom is slavery... oh Orwell, if you were only here... |

I thought that Marikken's comment that "Capitalism keeps looking more and more like what we were taught communism looked like. " was a very good and perceptive observation of what is happening now in the U.S..
The World Book Dictionary(pre-bush era editions) defines Capitalism as:
Capitalism-(kap'e te liz' em), n. 1. an economic system based on the ownership of land, factories, and other means of production by private individuals who compete with one another, using the hired labor of other persons, to produce goods and services for a free market for whatever profit may be obtainable: The characteristic feature of modern capitalism is mass production of goods destined for consumption by the masses(Newsweek). 2. the concentration of wealth with its power and influence in the hands of a few. 3. a system which favors the existence of capitalists or the concentration of wealth in the hands of the few.
and defines Communism as:
Com•mu•nism (kom' ye niz em). n. 1.a philosophy or system derived from Marxism, advocating state ownership of land and property, postulating class conflict, and seeking the overthrow of noncommunist societies in behalf of the proletariat. 2. a political, social, and economic system in which the state governed by an elite party, controls production, labor, and distribution, and, largely, the social and cultural life and thought of the people: Communism is expressed in various movements, but Russian sovietism is often referred to as a fair example. In communism ownership and control of everything would be in the hands of a small group presumably representing the common people (Emory S. Bogardus). 3. a social order in which property is held in common by the community or the state; communalism. [ |

Could these photos be any clearer? Everytime you vote and pay taxes YOU are enabeling the greatest war mongering machine in history. Government is FORCE and nothing else and they are willing to turn inward by creating a domestic enemy{you)or terrorize the world to just to keep the power and money flowing. Think the answer is Kerry or Bush, Demo's, Republicans or anyother bullshit party pushing for a new world order? They all belong to the same club and drink cocktails over the bodies of dead children in Waco or Baghdad. They won't shed a tear over you if you get in the way. Want more stormtroopers on your doorstep? The only humane answer is NO! Get the bastards off your back and regain your freedom using the simple logic of a child. First step: Stop paying taxes and voting for the Feds. They can't terrorise you without money can they! Now that wasn't complicated was it! |

'John' down the bottom of the page hits the nail on the head. I remember the newscasts from the 80's showing the KGB videotaping demonstrations in the bad ol' USSR. It was always held up to us as proof of their sinister intent. Imagine not being able to protest without being filmed! Nowadays we know better. It turns out it's just crime prevention. And the KGB never got so much Darth-armor either. Comes of being poor communists I guess (though have you checked your budget deficit recently? And you thought communism was inefficient!) |

This looks very familiar. Back when I was in the National Guard I use to train with the use of the batan. I use to train in civil disturbance, which is one of the area's that the National Guard is used for. I've also done MOUT (Military Operations under Urban Terrain), and had to train against snipers and terrorists. When I was in Saudi Arabia with the National Guard for 5 and 1/2 months, I continually trained in MOUT and riot situations. In 135 degree's I also protected a PAT site. |

What a bunch of crud; this is all for sensationalism and scare mongering. You don't need an army of goofy looking cops to stop terrorists, its not like their going to run screaming into the building yelling Alluha Akbar. Security checks are the only thing that will work; all of this behaviour is useless against terrorist attacks. |

Booga Booga is the only way GW can get "reselected".
All that stupid looking police gear...think of the money spent on it, and what that money could buy; police forces around the country short of equipment & manpower, due to The threat-Liberation-is it a new reason today? Iraq. You know...the people who end in I (Iraqi), that got confused with Saudi (the people responsible for 9/11?) One more comment on "Booga Booga", and the "terrist" threats against NY. Al Quaida HATES GEORGE BUSH. Anyone who thinks they would launch a "terrist" attack before the elections is A FOOL (to put it mildly). On second thought, maybe they should start distributing that gear across the country when GW attempts to steal another election. I think it may be needed. |

America was born from a revolution, and it will die in one. What we are seeing now in this country has gone on since long before I was born, and shall continue.
For those of you who think this is merely 'scare tactics' and 'sensationalism'...well...I hope you are right. But I think, for those of us who can read and write ( which is a TRUE minority of us in America )...its fairly obvious that something disgraceful, ugly, and quite sinister is going on in the world right now.
At this point, its way too late to stop anything. You can be a peaceful demonstrator, or a raging idiot.
I have to agree with a few other posters above - if you have the means to get a weapon, do it...and soon. Keep it locked away. Hide it. Cause already, they are starting to force people to give up yet another constitutional right, the Right to Bear Arms.
Buy it, hide it, and get ready. Cause before you know it, America is going to die the same way She was born, and probably sooner than you think. And that leaves you with two options - sit locked away in your house, or the NEW Free Speech Zone ( Guantanamo ), and cry through the final days...or make your stand with your fellow Americans.
Regardless, Her days are numbered. |

This is very true. America will, from my educated judgement, again see the glory and misery of revolution. But it will not be the end, if we are fortunate, yet a new beginning. In the paraphrased words of that great statesman, Thomas Jefferson, from time-to-time the Tree of Liberty MUST be watered... and it can only flourish on the blood of tyrants. There are far too many tyrants, as is evident from these photos from the national convention of what is supposed to be the PEOPLE's party. Perhaps the time is drawing near for the American people to re-establish their freedom. |

Very nice photos......I'm sure the majority of people who participated in the rallies were in there early twenties. It would appear that most college kids attend these rallies and grow up to become exactly what they protested against. I'm sure there were some legitimate protests going on but I do feel the police showing up in full force was necessary. People comment on their black uniforms as Draconian or Darth Vader like. If they were all in white they would be the angels of death. Regardless what they were people are going to throw up road blocks. I'm sure some people were not happy but when you look at how many arrests were made (fewer than 8) for the entire week I'd say it was a success from both parties. People worry too much about other countries and what other people think rather than what's really wrong with this country. It's division and lack of morals and standards. Freedom is democracy is a good thing but despite all the gains we have made in racial equality the opposite is now happening. It appears now that having black colleges are totally acceptable while a all white college is not. We can use Morhouse for example. We have the Latin Awards, The Esence Awards which celebrates African American achievments. We certainly cannot have the White Awards because that would be going over the top. Is it only me that sees things falling apart? Forget unity people will never be satisfied with what they have. Everybody needs their own thing. It's so frustrating to see people with bumper stickers that say "Free Tibet" when you can pretty much turn on every other major city corner and see a homeless person on our own soil regardless of their color. It confuses the heck out of me because this would appear to be something we can fix but we choose to handle stuff that is out of our grasp. I'm sure I may get a few comments for this but what the fuck is wrong with us a people and a country. Lets fix what's here and then we can look elsewhere to offer aid. |

You'd better believe the police state started way before Dubya took the wheel.
It actually started with an elitist conspiracy for world domination; to an Anglo-Saxon-American-Superiority conspiracy to bring America back under the English Crown; To Prescott Bush, his father in law, George Herbert Walker and other big names conspiring with that Aryan superiority; to George Herbert Walker Bush sleeping with the enemy, including Iran-Contra, and as well as stacking the deck by appointing numerous federal judges; to Dubya so ruthlessly riding on the Patriot Act through Rummy's connections at Abu Ghrai; and featuring all those Bush boys carrying on that same family tradition--or whether it be Marvin in charge of security at all the air ports where those passenger jets were hijacked from on 9/11/2001, or Jeb blocking e-vote regulations in Florida, or Neil's typical Bush white colar crime(savings & loan)tricks, or uncles Willian Bush and Prescott Bush Jr. making huge profits off the war in Iraq; and right along side Halliburton and uncle Dick that is.
AND DON'T FORGET ALL THOSE UNANSWERED 9/11 QUESTIONS, NOR DUBYA AND UNCLE DICK BOTH CONSULTING WITH CRIMINAL ATTORNEYS REGARDING THE CIA LEAK INVESTIGATION.
You'd better believe that police state started way before Dubya took the wheel. |

Even just a few years ago, photos like these would be sluffed off as some sort of wide-eyed paranoid work of science fiction... Now it seems the only "fiction" here is in the belief that there can ever be some sort of turning back.
As a nation, the United States seems to be heading down a slippery slope into becoming "a very different place".
Is there anything left that the "common man" can even do at this point to reverse this trend? |

Like Obi Wan Kenobi said there are other ways to fight. The powers that may be have drawn thier line in the sand, and it's high fucking time We the People draw ours. It's called a Peoples Petition for Redress of grievances regarding the governments violation of the taxing, war powers, privacy and money clauses of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Until the government responds to Petitions they are nothing more than rogue thugs and we don't have to give them a dime of our money, that is our RIGHT. Bob Shultz gave a wonderful history regarding Petition for Redress on C-span recently and his organization has just filed a landmark lawsuit against our government for this very matter.
The goverment is trying to create confrontation on thier terms people so don't get sucked into it, the place to fight is in the courts not on the street. Direct your energy there and the government will be forced to fight on our terms.

While all this is surely upsetting, remember that true freedom comes from "within". That may not seem too assuring in this scary time, but that kind of freedom can never be taken no matter how many fences or cages they build (they might take my life but they will never have my soul). Since the Bankers gained control of this country thru the enactment of the Federal Reserve (not federal or a reserve)in 1913 we have been deceived by a world of illusion, lost our land, (who actually OWNS their home? not many),and have watched as big business and our Gov't officials bed together . The U.S. will collapse quickly. Its too late to save this system, Its run its course and it ran Off Course. We can keep "writing to our congressmen", write editorials, etc, but it just doesn't seem to matter..."They" have all their ducks in a row...maybe it is time to starting making a new blueprint for our country. And I hope the first things we get rid of are: Income Taxes, Federal Reserve, and Big Business funding our gov't officials....then and only then will this country be able to work with other nations for peace. |

I live in the city and work as a civilian for the BPD. My friend is a cop and had to work 16 hour shifts seven days straight prior to and during the event. These guys aren't involved in some dark conspiracy. They are regular people who were ordered by the Mayor to work all week and in riot gear because 50,000+ protesters were expected on a daily basis. The cops weren't beating and shooting anyone. They were there in case any rioting or public disorder started. And the reason they are wearing that gear is because they didnt want to get hit with fecal matter or urine.
What do you people want? I'm not being sarcastic, I mean that genuinely. You blame these cops as if they are part of some grand Orwellian scheme, when they are just regular guys who get absolutely no respect for the dangerous jobs they do every day. Yeah, there are some bad cops out there, just like there are some bad protesters, and bad politicians. Stop blaming the wrong people for the problems we face in society.
I'd like to hear some of your suggestions as to how security should have been handled during the event.
Also, on a side note, I share your frustration with the current situation. The candidate who wants to create a federal liveable wage and universal medicare isn't even allowed to debate. I've been following all the independent new sites prior to and after 9/11 and am well versed in all the lies the govt shoves down our throats. The election of 2000 was blatantly rigged, and everyone just sat on their thumbs. Absolutely nothing was done. Bush completely rigged Florida and nobody did anything. He went right into office. Where were all the protesters then? Why weren't thousands of people flooding the streets then? And where has all this anarchy/underground movement talk gotten us? Bush cheated his way into office, lied to start a war, finished his entire four-year term, and is poised to start another. All this talk has gotten the country nowhere and will get it nowhere in the future. It is frustrating, but it is fact. |

The journalist Rex Curry pointed out that few people know that the Pledge of Allegiance was written by a National Socialist in the U.S. (Francis Bellamy) and originally had a straight-arm salute and that it was the origin of the salute of the National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nazi Party).

a lot of comments on this page bitching about how the riot cops are fascists because their uniforms look scary or their helmets look scary or what have you... all utter nonsense of course. that stuff is designed to practical specifications, ie to prevent injury from rocks, bricks, etc thrown by protestors. and of course, they're only trampling on your rights if you think you have a constitutional right to break out the windows of restaurants and to overturn cars. if you just march, hold up signs, chant your slogans, etc they will just stand by and watch. i live very near to DC and i go downtown all the time; marches and demonstrations are quite common there, and 99% of the time the police are nothing more than spectators. They will intervene only with good reason. It's unfortunate that so often, political demonstrations are infested with looters or punk kids who just want to bust in windows, run wild in the streets, and grab what they can; but it's a fact. as long as the demonstrations stay peaceful, there isnt a problem with the cops, so dont let YOUR demonstration play host-body to idiots who think its a good idea to hurl rocks at the cops. |

Not speaking from experience, mind you, it is my idea that in the larger, more visible, or important demonstrations of establishment policy, the greater the possibility of an agent provacotuer(sp?) or perhaps several being used to discredit/disrupt the demonstrators at the behest of the authorities or power elite. Then ofcourse the police begin crowd dispersal, beatings, arrests, etc. I acknowledge that some protesters ruin it for everyone involved by acting in a way to cause the riot police to start thumpin' heads. The police ultimately serve the powers, not the citizens. Demonstrators should begin donning similar suits of armor and take some basic self defense courses, then act as they would at any other demonstration, peacefully, and if it starts getting physical simply stand their ground and beat off the police attack. I imagine that behavior from the people would be not accepted well at all by the authorities. But who on either side wants to be intimidated by armed and armored soldiery? It's going to get much worse before it starts to get better. I am going to begin the construction of my body armor next week. |
