Protestors recreate US-Mexico Border at Marriott |

Group protests Arizona Delegates at Marriott |
Yesterday, Thursday July 29 2004, a decentralized action took place in front of the Marriott hotel, where the Arizona delegates to the Democratic National Convention were staying. Protestors drew a "border" on the ground and with Department of Homeland Security pig masks and cardboard checkpoints they tried to stop the "illegal" entry of delegates into the "U.S." from "Mexico." They carried signs to alert folks about the racist border policy teamed with the North American Free Trade Agreement creates a living nightmare for the people of Mexico. Signs told of labor exploitation, environmental racism, and the global "race for the bottom" where corporations move jobs from the "first" world to the supposed "third" world in order to exploit a labor pool and lax environmental laws. Protestors also distributed flyers with information about border militarization in the southwestern states and how it has affected the people of Mexico, CA, AZ, NM, TX as well as the Native American reservations. Are we just suppose to open our borders to everyone? These people come here and they immediately feel they are owed free money from the gov't. Either that or they take the so called low paying jobs that Americans won't take. This is what creates the elitist attitude of Americans, they won't take these jobs because they don't have to. Also, the employers like it because they don't have to pay taxes for the "illegals" |

Mexican workers are some of the hardest working, best work-ethic people I have ever seen. They don't come here thinking the gov't owes them something, most hide from the government while making crap wages paid by greedy corporations paying them less than minimum wage because they know they are too scared of being caught to use the protections of labor laws. I'm with mothra - though my language is not quite as foul. |

it always makes me laugh when people talk shit about immigrants (legal and otherwise by the state). is that what you believe about your ancestors. or is it that your ancestors, parents, grand parents or whatever where some how different from the immigrants of today. there are some bad immigrants but the vast majority are hard working people that have no rights to any of the welfare you claim they are here for. they have no rights and yet they still work hard for everything. stuck in hotels sleeping four to a room, nothing has changed from the Irish slums of the 19th century to the modern Lation slums, Chinese slums and slums for everyone else that comes here to give oppurtunity for their kids. Up the Immigrants, Fuck the red neck reactionary nativists. |

The USA's Own "Separation Wall?"

I would like to more about this issue. Only recently was I made re-aware of it when I heard an interview on Pacifica WBAI program "First Voices" last week (the week of July 20, 2004). A Native American woman named Ophelia from Tucson, Arizona, was interviewed there discussing the issue of the USA's own huge "barrier wall" that is being constructed. This wall is going to be huge, running from southern California cutting across east through the south western states. She said it is already seriously interfering with the native peoples' ability to exercise their participation in their sacred rituals and normal agricultural activities. She also called for help from the media to bring this issue to public notice. Also on the show was a man named John Halpern who is making a film in which Ophelia is featured called "Anger." The film shows how people deal creatively with their anger in response to institutional abuse. He said the native peoples in that area have [humorously] started issuing "visas" and "permits" for tourists who wish to visit their lands for the festivals.

i wish i could have seen it, sounds like a great and relevant idea coming from one who spent several months en la frontera, immigration issues especially from mexico and other central american countries have been enormously impacted by NAFTA (a reaganite dream turned clintonite reality) democratic delegates and supporter ought to know the reality of their neo-liberal policies. |
