Critical Mass Delegation @ DNC !!!! !
PROTESTING IS FUN!
BIKES RULE!
Whichever genius created this txtmob.com site is a friggin' genius,
because it's working.... I was getting up this morning, apathetic, no protest on the old agenda, when a Bl(A)ck Tea SMS alert for
a Critical Mass ride popped up on my cell. The ride was big, and I bet I wasn't the only one there because of
the SMS alert system:
29-Jul-04 07:35 a From:000000000 BTS@txtmob.com 7/9, 07:33, FNB serving breakfast in Copley Plaza across from Convergence Center. Critical Mass gathering.
Canceled the old "showing up to work early" plans, jumped on my bike, and rode 2 Copley - yeah!
lets roll!!!! -- Ride gets going down Boylston St.
On my way in solo, an automobile driver GIVES ME THE BIRD!---- "F- YOU PUNK!!!" Hey thanks man, in 10 minutes bikes are going to be in charge of the streets .. have fun waiting in traffic.
Arrived at Copley, not much going on at 1st. Until ...... Hello phalanxes of hardcore anti-riot bike police moving in formation, riding the wrong way down Boylston St. !
. . . . yelling @ pedestrians . . . "YO YO YO YO MAKE WAY, OUT OF THE WAY!!! !"
thank god the police are here, everything's going to be A-OK!! !
charles st. - soft zone ho!
Good Cop Report: it's a police state, but the actual guys i was riding next to seemed like decent guys.
Actually, I think the cops along for the ride enjoyed themselves quite a bit. They did yell at me once pretty bad when I stopped to switch batteries in my camara . . . like, I'm soooooo sorry i obstructed traffic and delayed all those busy drivers going important places in their cars for 1 second.........
yah, w/ the amount of sh** i take from drivers on a daily basis biking solo in this city? . . . cha right . . i'm reeeeal sorry. (not)
flying down back side of beacon hill - ruling school street! !!
Bad cop report: A motorcycle cop ran over a kid's bike at Haymarket and taco-ed his back tire, which sucked pretty bad . . .
rotary protest @ Haymarket, police-citizen relations get testy @ intersection of Congress and Merrimac....
Good cop report: but on the whole the cops came with a pretty nonconfrontational approach and a policy of avoiding arresting bikers or citing stragglers, and they stuck to it and pulled it off. In fact they let us pretty much abolish the vehicle code for a few hours and just own the streets, ignore red lights, and ride wherever we wanted. that was so fun, especially through the really narrow streets of the financial district!! !
riding Beacon St. to the top of the hill and bombing School Street en masse through the intersection w/ the cops holding traffic for us . . . that was the best!
we gotta do this again....
...approaching South Station bus depot! !!... w/ bikes & buses, who needs Detroit, or War in Iraq?
Overheard on corner of School & Washington--
Angry Pedestrian: "Just arrest them!"Big Huge Bike Cop: "Sorry man, that doesn't work, think of something else."
hey buddy, i've got the solution: just saddle up, cuz DNC Critical Mass rules!

I have to give props to all involved in critical mass. That was a great fucking idea. It also pleases me to hear about the handful of cops who actually did behave in a humane manner. It goes to show that while most of the time cops are fascist pigs, many have potential to act like real human beings sometimes. I think that should be exploited. When given the oppurtunity, we should try our best to see through the uniform and connect with whatever shred of humanity they have left. Of course when they start tear gassing us and beating us we have but little choice but to resist with the utmost ferocity. My point here is not to sympathize with or appease state opression, but rather to connect with people (including cops) on a human level so that they actually might start thinking for themselves and seriously reconsider their role as faceless opressors. Nevertheless, keep fighting the good fight. |

Delighted to hear Critical Mass at DNC 2004 was a success. I participated in the Critical Mass at the DNC 2000 in Los Angeles. We ended up being the largest group arrest of the entire convention (71 people). And we were just riding bicycles! Stupid LAPD. In the end, we class-action sued and got paid million$. So I'm riding my shinny new bike today, working to make a better tomorrow. Cheers! |
