Bush ~ Kerry Flyer used at DNC protests
31 Jul 2004
Modified: 01 Aug 2004
A flyer that affinity groups used at various DNC protests and related events.
is_this.jpg
Below is a flyer that Save Our Civil Liberties (SOCL) and other affinity groups used when confronting delegates and Kerry supporters this past week (DNC2RNC marchers are also handing it out to onlookers as they march through New England).

On late Thursday afternoon, after SOCL temporarily blocked the delegates' entrance to the Fleet Center (story to follow), we distributed hundreds of these flyers to delegates and DNC staffers who were bottle-necked in the highly guarded entrance way.

The flyer elicited a range of interesting reactions, from surprise and support to anger and hostility. Many "anybody-but-Bush" (ABB) folks are taken in by the Kerry's rhetoric, which seems progressive--but in reality it just sugar coats positions that are very similiar to, or only marginally to the "left" of Bush.

If you plan to engage ABB's with these issues, here are some hastily-written talking points to address some of the questions that Kerry supporters raised (e.g., regarding the Death Penalty, Same Sex marriage, Universal Health Care, etc.).

Some Talking points to accompany the Bush/Kerry handout:

1. War on Iraq/Militarism in general

Kerry says he wants to "bring the troops home" but in reality he wants to continue the occupation. He wants to send more troops by re-building a coalition of occupying forces. (see his DNC speech and www.johnkerry.com.) Moreover, a Kerry fact sheet lays out his plan to further militarize the U.S., perhaps even more than Bush. Kerry wants to expand the U.S. armed forces by adding 40,000 troops to active duty, double the U.S. special forces capability, increase funding for high-tech weaponry (including "directed energy weapons"), and make "homeland security the primary mission of the national guard." See http://www.johnkerry.com/pdf/pr_2004_0603.pdf

2. PATRIOT Act

Kerry is not so far from Bush in his views on the Patriot Act. Although the DNC platform calls for the elimination of certain provisions of the PATRIOT Act (e.g., the data collection of library data--which, in fact, was never really enforced by the Bush/Ashcroft administration), it leaves many of the Act's contents intact as well as the dangerous affronts to civil liberties contained in the Homeland Security Act, PATRIOT Act II, as well as numerous executive orders. See http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4839040/

3. Isreal's Apartheid Wall

As the Electronic Intifada notes, "Kerry's Middle East Policy is a dangerous journey mapped out on a carbon copy of Israel's view of the conflict. After the Bush Administration's similar position and laissez faire approach to gross Israeli violations of human rights, Palestinians can expect few changes to the present misery." See http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article2864.shtml

4. Same-Sex Marriage

Although Kerry opposes a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, he also opposes legalizing same-sex marriage. In March, he endorsed an amendment to the Massachusetts state Constitution banning same-sex marriages -- as long as it included a provision to honor civil unions for same-sex couples. He favors, instead, civil unions--but without "equal" access to state-sanctioned marriage, many gay men and lesbians feel that Kerry treats them as second class citizens (of course, some queers--myself included--think that the quest for "marriage equality" is misguided, but the point is that Kerry isn't the pro-Queer president that some make him out to be). See http://www.planetout.com/news/roundups/package.html?sernum=329

5. Corporate Globalization

Kerry supported NAFTA. He supports the FTAA and CAFTA. He supports the WTO, the World Bank and the IMF. Enough said.

6. Universal Health Care

Kerry might parrot the phrase "universal health care" in his speeches -- but the fact remains that he does NOT support a single-payer system in which health care would be universally accessible to anyone regardless of their ability to pay. In fact, Kerry supports only a few minor reforms to the U.S. health care system (e.g., by offering government subsidies to the insurance industry in the case of catastrophic illness, offering tax credits to small businesses, etc.). His plan leaves intact the existing medical industrial complex: under Kerry's leadership, the insurance industry and the pharmaceutical industry will continue to reap huge profits at the expense of human suffering and millions would continue to fall through the cracks, and alternative therapies, including accupuncture and homeopathic medicine, would continue to be ignored. See www.johnkerry.com for his "plan".

7. Death Penalty

It is true that Kerry opposes the death penalty in most cases. But he supports the death penalty in certain federal cases (e.g., "terrorists") and says that in the end it's up to the states to decide. He also voted for legislation that makes it harder for individuals on death row to appeal their cases. See http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0345/mondo5.php

8. "Pro-Life" Judges

Kerry voted for Antonin Scalia. He has recently stated that he would be open to nominating anti-abortion judges. See http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2004/5/19/212822.shtml

9. The Cuba Embargo, Plan Columbia, the Prison Industrial Complex and Protest Pits

These are pretty obvious...

Terrific checklist.. highlights how similar both candidates are in succinct fashion. I think the flyer would be even more effective if you had the "talking point" text in the back of the checklist to expand on those ideas. Great work!

On Flyer: Plan Columbia is spelled wrong. It should be spelled Colombia with an O.

"Get Informed. Get Involved."
