The Shortwave Report 6/1/01 ˇLISTEN GLOBALLY!
31 May 2001
A weekly 30 minute review of stories and opinions in English recorded from a shortwave radio. Free to rebroadcast, please notify. Times and freqs for English-language broadcasts. Radio Netherlands, Germany, China, Russia, Cuba. 13.6MB mp3
This week's Shortwave Report (June 1) is up on the website. (13.8MB/29:54). It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you air it. If you only air a part of it, please tell your audience where you got it ( I'm happy to report that more stations are scheduling it in on a regular basis, which will hopefully lead to my getting a grant for producing it. The program will soon celebrate it's fifth anniversary.
This edition features stories from Radio Netherlands, China Radio International, Radio Deutsche Welle, the Voice of Russia, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- in Columbia, left-wing rebels and right-wing paramilitaries continue to battle over control of many villages; at the 2nd Global Forum on Corruption in the Hague, Nigeria is making plans to lose the title of being the "most corrupt" nation on the planet; in France, where government corruption is taken for granted by the populace, a Foreign Minister and his mistress face jail on a $64 million oil company scandal.
From China Radio International- a story on the G-15 conference in Jakarta, an attempt to counterbalance the global domination of the WTO and the G-8; Chinese scientists are busy at work performing genetic modifications to plants, pigs, cows, sheep, and they've cloned goats.
From Deutsche Welle a report on the Baltic States Human Rights Conference, attended by over a hundred NGOs, discussing free press, refugees, and the trafficking of women.
From the Voice of Russia, an analysis of their attitude toward the eastward expansion of NATO. NATO is holding a conference in Lithuania, Russia isn't invited, and they are unhappy about it.
From Radio Havana Cuba- the G-15 meeting criticizes the IMF and global control by Western industrialized nations; Henry Kissinger refuses to testify in France about his intimate knowledge of human rights violations in Chile; US scientists have affirmed that Agent Orange continues to cause irreperable damage where it was sprayed during the Vietnam War; an opinion piece on the US military spending, currently costing $590,000 per minute!
All these intriguing stories, plus times and frequencies for English-language broadcasts. Even a little spiel about shortwave radios. ˇFurthuR!
