Proposed Somerville Community Bikepath
04 Jun 2001
A new group, Friends of the Community Path, is forming in Somerville to give grassroots support to a new proposal for extending the Red Line Linear Park Bikepath further into Somerville towards the Lechmere T station, with hopes to connect to Cambridgeside, the Charles River bikepaths, and thus to Downtown Boston.
The extension is to be called the 'Somerville Community Bikepath', and if the proposal is accepted by the city and by the MBTA (who I understand are to build it), it will go a long way to creating a single bikepath that connects Downtown Boston with Arlington and Lexington, as well as the communities inbetween.

I urge all those interested in cycling, as well as environmentalists and anti-pollution activists to get involved in this effort. The creation of useful bike routes through these urban areas will save lives that are otherwise endangered by Boston traffic, as well as getting more people out of their cars and thus making Boston a safer, more environmentally sound area. This is a project that has the potential of giving the communities it serves real, visible benefits in terms of the environment, health, and standard of living.

Upcoming meeting dates:
June 19th, 7:00pm 112 Belmont st. (next meeting.)
June 23rd, 11:00am meet at Cedar st at end of existing Community Path(walking tour of new Community Path). Rain date Sunday same time.
