Former JP Man Burns Self After Son Killed in Iraq
26 Aug 2004
I am hugely sad about this and I cried a lot today and I want people to know this man who I love a lot and who was a JP resident until a few months ago. See the link.

After being informed that his 20-year-old son was killed while serving in Iraq, a Florida man doused a U.S. government van with gasoline and set it on fire while sitting inside.

Carlos Arredondo, 44, was severely burned and rushed to Hollywood Regional Hospital in Florida after learning that Pfc. Alexander Arredondo had died, police said.

This is tragic news, and it hits home all the more because of the local connection. My sympathy to Mr. Arredondo, his family, his friends, and his son's friends. End war!

I agree. I read about this in the boston globe this morning and was annoyed that the title didn't say that he burned himself (though the article did). I hope this illustrates to people just how terrible war can be.

I forgot to say that unfortunately I don't think this would have gotten any press coverage had the van not burned too. We don't even know how many US soldiers have died, and Bush hasn't gone to a single funeral... We treat people like objects (from the media to the government). It really is sick.

I am a friend of Carlos from JP-we used to play volleyball together on a local neighborhood sports team. I have not had any contact with him since late 1980's when I had to move out of JP, but when I realized the man in Florida was the same Arredondo I knew in JP, I was sick to my stomach all day knowing his son, Alex was killed in Iraq. I had met Alex a few times when he was 4-5 years old. I prayed for Alex. Carlos and his family. Victoria lives some 35 miles from me in Maine.

I mailed Carlos a long letter with beautiful picture of the Virgin Mary, but as my mailing went to Florida, I saw him on news being transferred to Boston Hospital, and my package just was returned to me two days ago. I would like very much to contact Carlos and wish him well and know how he is coping with this terrible tragedy.

I live at 355 Green Valley Road, Stockton Springs, Maine 04981. PH: 207-567-3450. Thank you if you can help put us together.

In JP I lived on Paul Gore Street near Flanagan's supermarket. I wish you well. Patrick
