6/21: Voluntary Rolling Blackout
19 Jun 2001
Modified: 10:27:33 PM
Many people all over the world have been planning a voluntary rolling blackout on the first day of summer, June 21 at 7pm - 10pm in any time zone (this will roll it across the planet).
FW: Voluntary Rolling Blackout: REMINDER

Regardless of your politics, please consider participating in a demonstration of conservation... it could make a difference. Mark your calendar to remember, and pass it on!

ROLL YOUR OWN BLACKOUT
THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER
JUNE 21, 2001 THURSDAY,
7-10pm worldwide, all time zones

As an alternative to George W. Bush's energy policies and lack of emphasis on efficiency, conservation and alternative fuels, there will be a voluntary rolling blackout on June 21 at 7pm - 10pm.

Many people all over the world have been planning a voluntary rolling blackout on the first day of summer, June 21 at 7pm - 10pm in any time zone (this will roll it across the planet).

Turn out your lights from 7pm-10pm on June 21. Unplug whatever you can unplug in your house or turn off the main breaker. Light candles, build a fire in the back yard or street corner, or enjoy the dark. Spend time with
your friends, family, and loved-ones. Maybe you could hold a huge potluck and cook over the fire! Examine your electrical bills, trace where your energy comes from, and talk about alternatives to the electric technologies
on which we have come to depend. Tell stories, learn your family history, play games, take a stroll in the dark, or learn a little astronomy - have fun in the dark.

Please tell as many people as you can think of to participate and let your elected officials know how you feel about current policy. Let them know we want global education, participation and funding in conservation,
efficiency, and alternative fuel efforts, and an end to over-exploitation and misuse of the earth's resources.

Join the Rolling Blackout bike ride/picnic!
19 Jun 2001
One great option for cutting your electricity usage for the Rolling Blackout on Thursday (the 21st) is to join the Rolling Blackout Bike Ride and Picnic! There are two starting points:

Boston: 6:30pm, meet on the Esplanade at the Arthur Fiedler head statue (across the little channel from the Hatch Shell)

Cambridge: 7:30pm, meet in the Cambridge Common, at the statue in the center

The ride will go down Mass Ave and end up on top of a huge hill in Arlington. There will be a picnic in a park which has a fantastic view of Cambridge and Boston. (Some food and drink will be provided, but the more the merrier!) Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will be able to see the sun set and the stars do their stuff.

For more info, check out the web site.

Whatever you decide to do for the blackout, have fun!
