Peter Iovino of Ford Motor Co. Issues Challenge
22 Jun 2001
After reading an IMC article about the USTrade Coalition, (the new name for the business cadre pushing FTAA and Fast Track), I sent out a note the members of the US Trade Steering Committee. Here is a transcript between Ford's Peter Iovino and me. He'd love to hear from you.

On Jun 19, 250 giant corporations from across the country came together in the Ronald Reagan International Trade Building in Washington DC to announce a new business coalition, USTrade, that will work to push the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), a new round of the WTO, and especially FAST TRACK in the U.S. Congress. Both the Sierra Student Coalition and our little birdie who infiltrated that meeting and lifted these documents agree that we CANNOT let those wealthy white men from USTrade win this fight! Don't let them forget that we are living in a post-Seattle, post-Quebec world - don't let them or Congress ignore our movement! We beat Fast Track in '97 and '98.
Let's do it again.

After reading the previous paragraph, and full story, at:

http://www.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=48370&group=webcast

I wrote an e mail to all those listed as part of the US Trade Steering Committee. Two people responded. One was Peter Iovino. I hope others will take him up on his challenge. It was nice of him to send me his cel phone number too.

THE FOLLOWING IS A TRANSCRIPT OF MY E MAIL CONVERSATION WITH PETER IOVINO. YOU CAN CONTACT PETER AT THE NUMBERS LISTED IN HIS RESPONSES. OR YOU CAN E MAIL HIM AT: Peter Iovino Ford Motor Co.

ME:
Please take note:

It is not a small group of radicals who oppose Presidential Fast Track Authority. Nor is it a small group of radicals who oppose your attempts to ratify the FTAA. You all know this or you would not be so furtive in your attempts to push this very agenda. The days of your agenda are numbered. The general public, as you surely know, stands firmly against your economic vision characterized by:

A plummeting of environmental stanards and wages

Attempts to terminate the democratic process by which treaties are ratified

Hypocritical misuse of Free Market theory to justify a corporate run "command and control" economy

The commodification of every aspect of life in every community from the tip of South American to Northern Alaska.

We will not tolerate the privatization of public policy. We will not tolerate your increasingly secretive attempts to impose your agenda on the general public. We will not tolerate this assault on the human condition. We will be watching you. We will be contesting your agenda. We will prevail.

We've just begun to fight back against the corporate leviathan that you have helped create.

PETER:

Bring it on, sucker. Oh, and by the way: Don't ever email me again.

Best regards,

Peter

ME:
I'll hold onto your highly reasoned response for my records.

And thanks for volunteering your fax number and mobile phone number. I'll be sure and pass this on to other concerned citizens.

PETER:
I told you not to email me.

Best regards,

Peter

Oooh, threats. I'll be sure and hold onto this for MY records.

Best regards,

Peter
