Environmental activists begin fast in protest of the slaughter of public land! Vigil at State House, July 5th at 11:00 a.m.

Activists began a fast on July 1st to protest the destruction of MA public land on Wachusett Mountain by the Wachusett ski area. The activists will not eat any solid foods pending a July 15th court ruling on the issue. The Wachusett ski area has been fighting to attain the right to clear-cut more than 2000 trees on the mountain. Earth First! has been fighting to stop it. Wachusett, home to the states largest stand of old growth forest, the states champion mountain laurel, and a vast amount of flora and fauna is under the golden ax of the ski area and its all about wreckreation. WMA proposes to clear 12.5 acres of public land to create two new ski runs. But in a state so bold as to call itself a “Commonwealth” the things that are truly held in common like the land, air and trees are being sacrificed in the name of profit.

“If it were up to WMA there would not be a single tree standing on our public land because these beautiful places are worth more to them as ski trails,” said Jason Kotoch.

On July 5th there will be a vigil and festival in front of the state house at 11 a.m. There will be signs, music and information. Earth First! is demanding that WMA end their destructive plans voluntarily. EF! has vowed to non-violently resist the plans until the end.

WMA leases 450 acres of public land from the state. In the past years they have violated laws and fought to weaken laws that would gain the forest protection. WMA has dragged large pipes through the old growth forest killing many trees. Later, 27 illegally cut trails where found, one of which measured more that a mile long. The forest needs a strong and intact buffer zone to protect it from various elements that would kill the fragile ecosystem. Word has it that an old growth protection bill might make its way into the Senate that would gain the protection of old growth forest. WMA has teamed up with State officials to gut the bill thus, allow the Wachusett expansion to go untouched by the law.
