Mexico: Locals Battle Walmart
12 Sep 2004
Modified: 11:44:15 PM
Teotihuacan, Mexico- Yesterday, residents protested the construction of a Wal-Mart in their ancient city. They are also taking legal action.
Locals protested outside and inside their town hall yesterday, demanding that the Wal-Mart not be constructed in their town, an big archeological site near Mexico City. The Wal-Mart would be visible from the top of the Pyramid of the Sun, which has been around for over 2000 years. Residents claim that this is one of the last indigenous areas, and that a Wal-Mart would interfere with their history, culture, and religion. One man said he would like Wal-Mart, the world's biggest retailer, to be in Teotihuacan, because it would save him time.
