DEMOCRACY IS HOTT: A Collaboration and Celebration for Young Progressive Minds !

NEWMARKET- The League of Pissed Off Voters is pleased to announce our local chapter kick off event, "Democracy is HOTT," at the Stone Church, 5 Granite Street, in Newmarket on September 27th from 6pm until 2am. This is a collaboration and celebration for young progressive minds. Piper Anderson, one of 12 co-authors of our book "How to Get Stupid White Men Out of Office: the anti-politics, un-boring guide to power" will be in town for a powerful reading, a young person's advocacy training, and to help us bring down the house! Piper is a queer woman of color performance poet, writer, activist, and educator based Brooklyn NY. Currently, she is the youth development coordinator at the East Harlem Tutorial Program, organizing co-chair for the Listen Up, America initiative and coordinator of the Lyrics on Lockdown national anti-prison tour. She has been published in the Austin Downtown Arts Monthly, Blu Magazine, Show-n-Prove, and Philadelphia Inquirer. In 2004 she will be publishing a collection of her poetry and prose entitled "For My Sisters On the Overpass."

Young people! Come learn about electoral politics, issue based organizing, diversity and coalition building and how to be the dopest, most effective advocatee for change. We'll provide the the beats, the noise, the space, you provide the rants and the rhymes. We will have DJ's and an open mic for you to speak your mind. This event is open to any and all young people who want to develop their political voices and create a powerful presence in the Seacoast as we bring down the house at the Stone Church. The event is all ages from 6- 9pm, when it will shift to 18+ with a cash bar until 2am. A limited food menu will be available throughout. Doors open at 6:00 PM and admission is on a sliding scale of $1-10- you decide.

The League of Pissed Off Voters is a new national, nonpartisan, grassroots organization dedicated to informing, mobilizing, and energizing young folks between the ages of 18 and 35 about politics on the local, state and national levels. "There is an exciting movement happening all over the country among young people. Young people are engaging themsleves in the electoral game. We are learning the rules, we are educating ourselves and we are organizing. We are going to impact our local and state elections this fall," says Justin Alfond, regional organizer.

"Democracy Is HoTT!" is part of the Seacoast League's ninety-day plan running up until election day. "This is a powerful fusion of arts, beats, and politics created for and by area young people under the age of 35, to bring us all together to develop and express our political voices," says NH League organizer Claire Howard.

For more information on future League events, check out our website at [ http://www.indyvoter.org ] www.indyvoter.org.
