Hondurans are dying |
|
by Nemisis of Mr Falck (No verified email address) |

Mr. Falck has attributed to me various comments I did not make. I do not
recall referring to anyone as "retarded." Additionally, I am not upset
about the concept of forgiving or restructuring the debt of the governments
of Central America. What appalls me is that President Flores, see the
previously mentioned article from the Boston Globe, expressed that the
millions of dollars in aid were not important to him, but rather forgiving
the debt and engaging in free trade were his priorities. |
Given the fact
that thousands of Hondurans were and are dying from the disaster, I found
the president's comments revealing of a concern for the Honduran economy
that exceeded his concern for the present welfare of the Honduran people.
It seems to me that anyone truly interested in the lives of the Honduran
people would make this his first concern rather than making the future
economic consequences his concern. Future economic consequences can always
be addressed AFTER the more important task at hand, that is, saving the
lives of people is addressed. Instead of focusing his attention on the
death of a significant percentage of his population, Flores USED the
disaster as an OPPORTUNITY to forward his political agenda. Additionally,
he consistently insulted his primary benefactor, the United States. Again
and again he has been using the word "DEMAND" to qualify his need for help
rather than the more diplomatic word "ASK". He is unique among the leaders
of Central America in the tone of his "DEMANDS."
Mr. Falck has unfairly characterized my concern for what is happening in
Honduras. He has twisted what I have said in an effort to help the people
of Honduras into an attempt to smear Honduras. Honduras as a country is not
only a beautiful place, but it is inhabited by beautiful cultures and
people. The words of the President of Honduras are just that, the words of
the President.
Finally, I mentioned to Mr. Falck that if he felt that free speech was
unimportant, perhaps he should return to his country where free speech is
not valued (by the Government). Perhaps this was too rash of an expression
of contempt for his attempts to censor those with whom he disagrees. To the
extent that this expression can be construed to be intolerant, I apologize.
My true intent was to convey the irony of his position.
Whether or not Mr. Falck responded with the previously quoted message in
response to someone who was attempting to use the group commercially is not
relevant. What is relevant is his acceptance of the group as a political
forum as well. It is exactly this political aspect of the group that he was
attacking when he tried to squelch my participation.
I would like to add more evidence the attitude of the Honduran press has
been very crass with the including of the following headlines of various
Central American newspapers on November 10th. Note that all of these
headlines pertain to the same event.

Notifax - Noticias de Nicaragua (11/10/1998)
"PRESIDENTES PIDEN PLAN MARSHALL PARA C.A.: Los Presidentes centroamericanos

La Tribuna (Honduras) (11/10/1998)
"CA demanda a comunidad
internacional recursos

Since my country is being asked (or demanded) to give help to Honduras, I
feel it is my right to comment on this, regardless of the sensitivities of
Mr. Falck
