Call to protest Columbus Day
11 Oct 2004
Modified: 05:45:06 PM
As many of you may know, this October 11th is supposed to be a day to commemorate and celebrate Christopher Columbus. This year, it happens to fall on National Indigenous Rights Day, which is quite ironic if you know anything about Columbus.
This is a call for decentralized direct action against Columbus.

We were brought up being taught how wonderful Columbus was, and how important he was to the founding of this great nation. On the contrary, Columbus never touched any land that is now part of the United States (but rather land in the Bermuda Triangle). He was known for cutting of the hands of natives, and being an all around brutal person. On Saturday in Denver, around 600 people protested Columbus Day by blocking a parade that was honoring the imperialist, and 230 people were arrested. Many of the protesters were American Indians, who pointed out that Columbus was the real savage. As quoted by an AP article, Adam Becenti said, "We're grown up to believe he was the first person here" which denies the American Indians' place in history and ignores the genocide they faced.
Recently in Boston, a statue of Columbus was covered with red paint (symbolizing blood) and the word murderer was painted underneath it. The statue has been defaced 3 times in recent years.
It is important to stand up to imperialism and genocide wherever they manifest, even if it is in the basic fabric of this country's history.
This is a call for decentralized direct action to bring to people's attention the truth about Columbus, though this is not encouraging anyone to do anything illegal. Methods such as flyers or street theater would probably work best. Also, I believe it would be best to help kids realize the truth so that they don't grow up with the same lies we have.
We must not celebrate genocide nor imperialism, but rather the truth.

Okay... this "direct decentralized action" call is for TODAY? Do you people even realize that effective actions take PLANNING? Or is forethought too, like, authoritarian?

Being a real American and not some kind of communist, I would celebrate Columbus day. Unfortunately my workplace decided to ignore the holiday, so I had to go to work to support my family.

I also wonder if along with protesting the American Holidays, Eric also protests the celebration of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and Hanukkah.
China discovered America in 1421! (Landed in California!)

Okay...Columbus got close. Never stepped on U.S. soil. Around 1492.
The Chinese step foot on California in 1421.
Why celebrate a phoney?

No one will ever know why I brought Jewish holidays into the mix, because Joe doesn't want you to see it. If you really want to know via free speech, email me and we will go anywherebutStarbucks and I will tell you over coffee. Heck, we could all go.
