Announcement :: Organizing
Western Mass Medic Training
26 Oct 2004
A street medic training will be held in Western Massachusetts this winter! There are a number of dates available for our trainers and location hosts (from January through late February), as well as multiple locations available (in Northampton and Amherst).
Our primary need right now is to gauge overall interest so that we can finalize our planning. The biggest issue is the space, as some locations will simply not work with a huge group. This is not a problem, but we'd like to know essentially how many people are interested in training beyond our ad-hoc list of several dozen before any publicity. You don't have to confirm at this point (since actual dates and location are not set), but if you are a potential trainee, please contact us at wemasm-training (at) noting your interest and contact info as well as answers to the questions raised below.

Also, we are now looking actively for additional trainers. We have a lead trainer (see below), but would like to have experienced medics, EMTs, or other medical personnel on hand to help facilitate the training. If you are interested in helping on this level, please contact me directly at medic (at) with a brief background and related experience. There's no particular bar being set for this training - our co-trainers range from medics with many years of experience, to medics with minimal experience but training, to RNs, to urban EMTs, to WFRs. If you think you have enough experience to bring something positive to the training, by all means get in touch.

If you are located in Western Massachusetts and are actively (or want to be) doing medic work, you may also want to consider joining up with the new collective, currently named WeMaSM (Western Massachusetts Street Medics - rhymes with spasm, orgasm, cytoplasm, ectoplasm, and a whole bunch of other asms). Aside from holding relatively regular (yearly?) trainings, we'll get together for both local and (more importantly) distant actions, and probably meet from time to time. There is a list active at wemasm (at) - Feel free to join even if you're not in the area, as it's an open list right now.

More details on the training, by way of FAQ precognition:

What is this training you're talking about?

It's a 30-hour (6, 12, and 12) training that will take place over a weekend. You will learn skills that will prepare you to work as an active street medic during actions of any scale. General first aid, emotional support, dealing with chemical weapons, treating other ordinance-related wounds, medic organization and logistics, and other related issues will all be covered in an intensive, hands-on environment. There will be scenarios and role-plays along with presented material throughout the weekend.

There is no mandatory charge for the training, with a $0-$50 sliding scale fee upon arrival. If you can afford it, please offer what you can, as it will help offset costs absorbed by the organizers and trainers, and potentially help this happen again in the future.

Why should I be excited about this particular training, even if I'm not in Western Mass?

While this has not been announced (widely) before now, our lead trainer is ... Doc Rosen! Doc has worked as a street medic for 40 years, and has been holding trainings throughout that time. He's held trainings in numerous countries in addition to his work on more general global health care issues in villages around the world. In this case, he's graciously agreed to do a rare East Coast training for us. As Doc is comfortable training very large numbers of people, we are open to as many individuals as are interested. If you have ever had any interest in going through this training, or simply want to go through it with one of the most experienced street medic trainers around, now is your chance.

Okay, I'm excited - What are some potential dates and locations?

The training will most likely be held in Northampton, MA. This is partially because there are more locations in Northampton that are non-student-centric, and we are attempting to offer this training to as many individuals in the wider Pioneer Valley community as possible.

That said, the dates will partially depend on how many students are interested. As most students in the area have January off and are away for the duration, if there are large numbers of student trainees then weekends during January are out. In your mail, please note which weekend from January 9-11 through February 25-27 you would prefer. We're flexible in our planning, but will nail down a date quickly so that everyone can finalize travel and other plans as soon as possible. If there is tremendous interest in a training sooner rather than later, that can happen, but we need to know now (since the general inclination right now is to hold the training in February due to that month generally being less stressful and more open for just about everyone, especially students). If you have no particular preference, that's fine too.

Er, how will I find out about the finalized training details?

Messages including finalized details will go out to all those who respond with interest in a few weeks (or before then, if responses seem to have ceased or a critical mass has been reached). Actual announcements and reminders of the training will be sent out to relevant lists during the weeks and months before it happens.

I'm coming from Swaziland - Will there be crash space available locally?

Yes, there will be several available spaces. If you need space, let us know, and once we set a final date and location you will be set up as necessary.

I can't be a trainer, but I have interest, time, resources, and/or energy - Do you need non-trainer help either during or before the training?

Absolutely. This training has thus far been and will continue to be a collective effort, and there are numerous areas you can help out in. Just mention that you'd like to help in some way with organizing and/or that you have resources available and we'll get together to figure out how to best work with each other.

What's the training contact address again?

wemasm-training (at)

Can I forward this announcement to other relevant lists or individuals?

Please do! Send it on to any lists where you haven't seen it already. When the actual date and location is set and the official announcement goes out, feel free to do the same.

How can I contact you directly with any additional questions or comments on things not covered in this message?

medic (at) will work. Feel free to say hello and offer any input or suggestions. I'm always game for a conversation about new and interesting ideas regarding medic organization or anything else that seems to make sense or doesn't, as the case may be. :)

We look forward to hearing from you soon; this training should be an amazing experience for all involved!

Be Well,

(for the Western Massachusetts Street Medic collective)
