On Friday November 19, 9am & Noon, at the Java Hut Café and Roasters, 303 Amherst Road (Rt. 116), Sunderland you can act in solidarity with workers and the IWW.
"Solidarity Shopping" at the Java Hut
Workers at Java Hut, a local café and coffee wholesaler in Sunderland, need
our support as they attempt to unionize with the Industrial Workers of the
World (IWW). They want the legal right to bargain collectively with their
employer. The major issues driving them to unionize are safety, disrespect
and unfair discipline, and having an effective voice at work that the
employer has to listen to.
An election supervised by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) takes
place December 3. Java Hut owners reacted by cutting hours, putting in
audio surveillance, threats, intimidation, and firings. The about a dozen
workers responded with Unfair Labor Practice Charges filed with the NLRB.
But, at this time, they have decided to try an "educational" approach.
They hope to educate their employers that the community wants workers to
have their rights, appreciates fair-minded employers, wants a unionized
café, and appreciates the high quality of service Java Hut workers provide.
You can help teach this lesson on November 19 by stopping by at 9am and/or
noon for something to eat or drink. Pro-union stickers will be available to
wear inside the café. Union members, please wear your union gear.
Supporters are also urged to contact the Java Hut owners and tell them to
stop union-busting activities and respect their workers right to organize.
(from I-91 Exit 24 [US-5/MA-10 towards WHATELY/DEERFIELD], go north
