To Open at Landmark Kendall Square Cinema in Boston on December 3rd

November 28, 2004 (New York)– Danny Schechter’s documentary “WMD: Weapons of Mass Deception” will open at the Landmark Kendall Square Cinema in Boston on Friday, December 3rd. “WMD” investigates and exposes the major US media networks for allowing the government to influence their coverage on the War in Iraq. The timing of the theatrical opening of “WMD” plays out against the backdrop of recent admissions by the presidents of three network news divisions that their own coverage of the run-up to the Iraq War was flawed.

A former ABC and CNN Emmy-Award winning producer, Danny Schechter challenges the media’s role in the war and examines how the government’s manipulation has not kept the airwaves “fair and balanced”.

Speaking on the panel at Stanford University in mid-November, David Westin, the corporate lawyer who runs Disney/ABC’s News division, Neal Shapiro of General Electric Co’s NBC News and Andrew Heyward of Viacom Inc’s CBS News were asked about their coverage of Iraq. “The three said that, in retrospect, they should have more aggressively questioned the Bush administration’s grounds for invading Iraq in the Spring 2003,” reported the Associated Press “Simply stated, we let down the American people on the weapons of mass destruction, and I sincerely regret that,” Westin said.

Advance reviews have been comparing the film to Michael Moore's Fahrenheit/911. "It is more cohesive and devastating than Fahrenheit/911", states the Boston Phoenix. Writing in the new issue of Vanity Fair media writer Michael Wolff says Schechter "…out Michael Moore’s Michael Moore" and brands the film a "comic masterpiece."

Wolff goes on to say “It shows, vividly, the media pretense, all dead certainty and farcical pomposity, against the now evident confection and put-up job and balderdash and mess of sentiment and bromides and unexamined blah-blah which constituted almost everybody's tale of the war.”

The Chicago Reader says it goes beyond Michael Moore and offers a "comphrehensive and devastating critique of the TV news networks complacency and complicity in the war in Iraq....brilliantly argued and well documented."

Danny Schechter, "the news dissector," is a veteran journalist and critic who edits Globalvision's, the world's largest on-line media issues network. His latest book Embedded: Weapons of Mass Deception (Prometheus Books) details the argument made in his new 98-minute independent film. Schechter is a four-time Emmy-award winner and a former network producer with ABC News and CNN. WMD is his 15th film.

In addition to opening in Boston, “WMD” will open in Austin and Denver on December 3rd, Washington, San Francisco, Berkeley and St. Louis on December 10th and expand thereafter.

“WMD: Weapons of Mass Deception” will open in the Boston area at the Landmark Kendall Square Cinema (1 Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA 02139). Photos and additional information is available from
