BU Biolab Review Not Being Re-Opened
16 Mar 2005
Modified: 02:07:40 PM
Romney Administration Decision - Will not re-open environmental review of BU's BSL4 Lab
from the ace email list:

Ace has learned that Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Affairs Ellen Roy Herzfelder wrote to BU on March 8, telling BU that she would not re-open the environmental review of the proposed lab based on the recent revelations that three BU lab workers were infected with tularemia in a BU lab in 2004 -- even though BU claimed in its environmental filings that it had no laboratory-acquired infections at any of its labs.

Herzfelder writes that based on the information provided by BU she finds "no evidence of a knowing or inadvertent concealment of a material fact or submission of false information during MEPA review."

This should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed the MEPA process. Once again, MEPA relies solely on BU's explanation, undertakes no independent review or analysis, and fails to understand or acknowledge the dire implications of having a BSL4 bioterrorism lab in our city and the threat to public health and safety from a lab accident.

This remains a live issue in the ongoing court case.

(MEPA is the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act.)
