Police in Germany are hunting pranksters who have been sticking miniature flag portraits of US President George W. Bush into piles of dog poo in public parks. Josef Oettl, parks administrator for Bayreuth said, "This has been going on for about a year now, and there must be 2,000 to 3,000 piles of excrement that have been claimed during that time."
The series of incidents was originally thought to be some sort of protest against the US-led invasion ofIraq. And then when it continued it was thought to be a protest against President George W. Bush's campaign for re-election. But it is still going on and the police say they are completely baffled as to who is to blame. "We have sent out extra patrols to try to catch whoever is doing this in the act," said police spokesman Reiner Kuechler. "But frankly, we don't know what we would do if we caught them red handed." Legal experts say there is no law against using feces as a flag stand and the federal legal experts say there is no law against using feces as a flag stand and the federal constitution is vague on the issue. |

Where can I order the flags. Perhaps a more profound use would be in the elephant enclosures at the zoo. Of course the flags would have to be much larger...but then the amount of "excrement" we must deal with on a daily basis from the boys on Pennsylvania Avenue increases exponentially every day! |

Hmm. Seems like it would be more productive (not to mention sanitary) for the German police to go after people who let their dogs poo on the sidewalks. There's no law against decorating poo? Brilliant though several years ago someone in my neighborhood is San Francisco did that same thing but just with the word "yum" on day glo oragne paper. I think they were protesting people who don't pick up after their dog. But as always the Germans do it better! |

AT- You think it takes patriotism to take advantage of our liberties in this country? I say it takes patriotism to defend the liberties of all. That is what President Bush is doing by leading us into the "War on Terror". He's defending our nation and way of life from terrorists who want to kill and destroy all of the freedoms that Americans take for granted. In the future, I hope you aren't so quick to claim what rights you have and notice and pay respect to those who defend them. Wasn't it, in fact, a democrat who bellowed "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Doggy Doo as Political Statement
Many Germans have a bad taste in their mouths towards the US since the start of the current Iraq war. But someone in Bayreuth, Germany also has a bad smell in his nose.
Since the US invasion in Iraq in 2003, relations between the US and Germany have cooled off. Many German citizens have less than a rosy opinion of American President George W. Bush. In the German city of Bayreuth, an unknown assailant has been venting his feelings toward the US -- and those feelings do not exactly, shall we say, smell like roses.
The man or woman has "decorated" some 2,000 to 3,000 piles of puppy poop in a city park with little American flags. Josef Öttl of Bayreuth's Castle and Garden Administration is baffled and a little upset about the matter.
"Maybe someone is protesting the war in Iraq or just trying to let people know that there are too many dog droppings in the park," he said.
The park worker said that the perpetrator frequently stops for weeks on end, only to then "decorate" up to 100 more piles of the canine excrement in a night. Öttl feels that the US is being insulted by the actions.
The police has increased patrols in the area, but a police spokesman said it is not a criminal act to place American flags in doggy doo. One state prosecutor pointed out that freedom of expression is highly protected in the German constitution.

GERMAN police are hunting for a gang who have been going around Berlin sticking tiny American flags into dog poo. Officers say they are baffled by the bizarre behaviour - which does not break any laws - and have stepped-up patrols to catch the gang.

We saw the disdain for public areas when we visited Germany. Noone curbs their dogs or disposes of poop. Putting the Bush flag in the poop is an ingenious combination of hygiene and political opinion. Gotta love those Germans.

In my opinion the US does rules on more than the US itself, and that is why there are people putting flags on dog poop as if they had been claimed by Bush. Get it? Although US law may not apply to any other country, US economic, militaristic, and environmental desicions (amongst other types) tend to affect the state of the whole world at large in a very measurable way.

It seems to me that Bush is the President, but if asked does he represent me? I have to answer no. Does he represent this country? Yes, for a limited time and in that time, very poorly. I don't see the US Flag in the feces, just Dubya's. People are doing it in Portland, Oregon now. You know, the city George I labelled "Little Beirut."
The point is this. I do not subscribe the the cult of personality that Bush represents this country in any way I would consider an example. He's just the President. I would fight for my rights and for my country if we were attacked, but not for George II, like a lot of people would/are.

As someone else pointed out this author already failed to keep his opinion to himself; however, be that as it may, I still feel it necessary to iterate that this country was founded by opinionated (and vocal about it) people. Imagine where this country would be if the Continental Congressmen kept their opinions to themselves--we'd lack the Declaration of Independence (the list of grievances being highly opinionated) and where would be as a nation if Thomas Paine had kept his opinion to himself, rather than publishing his pamphlet? Police probe blaze at Joburg beer festival

Johannesburg police have opened an arson docket after Saturday's gas blast in which at least 21 people were burnt at the German School's annual beer festival.
Parkview police station would be conducting the investigation, said Johannesburg police spokesperson Sergeant Sanku Tsunke on Sunday.
One of the injured was in Milpark Hospital's intensive care unit on Sunday, while five were in the hospital's high care ward, said hospital spokesperson Monique Lanz. Another two victims remained in a general ward. Two had been discharged.
All of them - believed to be mainly German and Swiss nationals Nsustained burns when a cloud of cooking gas ignited at the beerfest.

A coordinated search for a police dog that's been missing for nearly six days since he broke free from his handler in a wooded section of York has been called off.
BERWICK, Maine (AP) -- The handler, Berwick Police Officer Chad Allen, is continuing to search the woods for the tan and black German shepherd named Baron.
Baron disappeared Tuesday during a search for an intruder who entered a woman's home. The dog was wearing a reflective harness and had a 20-foot leash on him when he disappeared.

After more than a decade of putting itself back together again, Germany and its visitors are reaping the rewards of unity. Huge investments in infrastructure and services are not only erasing the Cold War dividing lines, scars caused by World War II are also finally disappearing. In real terms, this means that travelers are likely to move around the country faster, dine better and experience new attractions like the Reichstag's glass dome. A lot has changed, yet chances are that repeat visitors will still find the things they always liked: the restaurant serving huge helpings of sauerbraten or the biergarten with liter upon liter of lager and wheat beer.
Once you stop looking at Germany strictly in terms of east and west, you'll start to see it as the Germans do: as regions sharply defined by dialect, food, traditions and history. For the best perspective, sample as many regions as possible. Booming Berlin, now the No. 1 tourist magnet, is the clearest benefactor of reunification. Visitors to the cultural centers of Dresden, Leipzig and Weimar in eastern Germany will find improved amenities there as well. The north has the delightful old seafaring cities of Hamburg and Bremen. Along the Rhine and Moselle Rivers are picturesque castles and steep, terraced vineyards. The Grimm Brothers collected the tales they heard in a trail of villages from Hanau to Bremen. In the south are snow-capped Alps, the alluring Black Forest, Munich and Bavaria's boisterous beer halls and rococo palaces and churches.
Although it has plenty of fairy-tale sights and picturesque scenery that is reminiscent of medieval times, Germany is without a doubt a postindustrial, multicultural country with all the inherent advantages and conflicts. Reunification is a huge social and economic undertaking, and it comes on top of an already heavy and, at times, troubling history. Travelers to Germany will probably not be affected by much of this, but on the other hand, visitors shouldn't expect all parts of the country, at all times, to be an Oktoberfest.

This form of protest actually started in the UK, not Germany, as recently reported. The original poo-flags website was set up during the run up to the invasion of the Iraq, and appeared on Indymedia from time to time. The poo-flags website is no longer maintained, but the content is still available at:

And most importantly, the gallery and DOWNLOADS section (with printable "American Foreign Policy" flags and flyers) are still fully operational :) For some reason, the poo-flags website generated more activity in Germany and the Czech Republic than anywhere else, though there were quite a few contributors from USA and Canada as well. It's great to see that the idea has taken hold! Props to the German group and to madeyouthink! |
