Puzzling Evidence
04 Oct 2001
If Washington wants everyone to get in line for the “War against Terrorism” why not give people the information they need to make an intelligent decision?
Puzzling Evidence

Amidst all the chest thumping and jingoistic rhetoric in the wake of the September 11th massacre, we here in the “homeland” seem to be pretty much in the dark when it comes to identifying much in the way of evidence as to the guilt of Osama bin Laden or any other party. How is it that NATO generals and officials in other nations are able to view the “clear and compelling evidence”, but the citizens of the US are left without a clue? While it seems reasonable that the Administration doesn’t want to endanger what intelligence sources it may have on the ground in Central Asia (however sketchy they may be), surely Washington can come up with something more convincing than mug shots of Middle Eastern men who may, or may not be involved with our recent tragedy, or duplicate letters written in Arabic which suddenly appear like a bloody glove in three different crime scenes.
Polls suggest a great majority of the people in the US are perfectly willing to go to war without such evidence. Given our history for extra-legal activity perhaps this should not be at all surprising. Hell, we were still lynching people well into the 20th Century. However, this is the 21st Century and one might expect some improvement with our lot. Granted, the rising rightwing bile and flag-wrapped saber rattling drives many to such hysterics, but one would like to believe that most citizens of this nation are not so easily distracted……..wouldn’t one? If Washington wants everyone to get in line for the “War against Terrorism” why not give people the information they need to make an intelligent decision? The people need real information, not the sort of manufactured news coming out of some Ministry of Truth. Recent AP news snippets read like so much PR one wonders if the intelligence community has been recruiting among journalism school dropouts rather than from within the school itself. If the price were not so high, perhaps the insult to our intelligence would be bearable. But the price is VERY high indeed. We learned that all-to-well as we witnessed the horror in New York City. All those disturbing stories from other places we used to see on television or read about in the newspapers are now becoming local and regional news. Visiting more such scenes of devastation on other people will surly result in reruns we’d rather not endure.
It doesn’t seem like too much to ask for the American people to view these clues others are privy to. After all, they are being asked to bear the burden of the prosecution, after already bearing the burden of the crime.
