Who is Eve Lyman?

Should cult members affiliated with the Karzai family be leading the anti-war movement?
Should cult members affiliated with the Karzai family be leading the anti-war movement?

"Eve Lyman is the new director of Boston Mobilization. She came to us from Afghans for Civil Society where she was the US Coordinator. Prior to that she had worked in the private sector."

-the above is from the Boston Mobilization website.

Most of the Mobe staff has some sort of political organizing experience listed in their biographies. All we have is a link to Afghans for Civil Society.

While the stated aims of Afghans for Civil Society don't sound so bad, the fact that four family members of former Unocal oil employee Hamid Karzai are involved in this organization should arouse some suspicion.

An anti-war activist with ties this close to a puppet regime is strange. But what follows is just damn disturbing.

A google search of Eve Lyman reveals that she is/was part of the Lyman Family, a cult that worshipped a banjo playing god-incarnate named Mel Lyman. The Lyman family started in Roxbury's Fort Hill neighborhood, where they now own some impressive real estate.

Here's some insight on the backwardness on the Lyman Family.

"Prosperous today because of their industriousness and a small fortune inherited by one of their leaders, the Lymans own two Hollywood Hills mansions worth at least $4 million, with formal gardens, a peaceful stone pond filled with koi, a swimming pool and a classroom for the children. There is a huge underground garage where they keep their old white Lincoln limousine, two sports cars and a luxurious recreational vehicle, and surrounding all of this is a high brick and mortar wall.
They also own a scenic 280-acre Kansas farm, a Manhattan loft, a hilltop compound of eight residences above Boston's poor Roxbury section and a Martha's Vineyard retreat, plus three deep-sea pleasure fishing boats.
In all they own 20 homes, each filled with Victorian furniture and dozens of paintings by their benefactor, Thomas Hart Benton, and their own artists. Their Hollywood Hills homes feature a small museum celebrating American history. Another room holds thousands of old recordings dating to 1902, each packed in a protective sleeve in case of an earthquake."

"Adultery, a serious social offense, is unheard of. The singles among them are celibate. Homosexuals are not welcome, they say. "

In 1971, Rolling Stone magazine put the Lyman Family on its cover two issues running, ominously comparing them to the homicidal Charles Manson Family.
Writer David Felton, a pioneer in the impressionistic school of New Journalism, warned that Lyman was forging a new style of drug-and-personality cult that Felton called "acid fascism."

"When one of the men wants more coffee, he may get up and pour it himself, but more often the men just lift their cups an inch or two from the table and one of the women or girls refills it without being asked.
"Women should take care of men, should serve them so they can be creative," Jessie Benton said. "

Given all this, I am left wondering exactly who made the decision to put this woman in a position of leadership in the movement. I don't want to create unnecessary divisions and infighting but people like this can discredit an entire movement.

Eve Chayes Lyman, Mel's third wife (and the daughter of Harvard law professor Abraham Chayes and of Antonia Chayes, who was an undersecretary of the Army in the Carter administration)

I know of someone named Lyman who's in a commune, not a cult. I don't know much about it, but an article from Rolling Stone 34 years ago doesn't seem like the most impressive piece of evidence against her. What do people in Mobe think of her? The part about Karzai/Unocal seems more potentially problematic, but has that influenced stands that Mobe has taken?

Concerned, what's your relationship to Mobe, and to Ms . Lyman?

the difference between cult and commune

In 1978, it was reported that Lyman had passed away at age 40, though his followers claim that he is, in fact, still "orbiting the earth."

Lyman claimed that folk music was a gift from God that had to be preserved and nurtured. Lyman eventually cut out the middleman and claimed that he himself was God.
