Rain dampened 4/20 attendance at the University of Vermont in Burlington today, but not the spirits of the 40+ attendees. |

UVM clamped down on the annual 4/20 marijuana freedom rally this year as part of their image-burnishing campaign. University officials planned to charge SSDP--Students for a Sensible Drug Policy--$2000 for extra security if they held the event. Instead, students gathered at Redstone Green for an unsponsored rally.
Attendees had to bypass a cordon of yellow-jacketed rent-a-cops to join their fellow freedom activists on a rain-soaked campus. A large banner held by SSDP activist Tommy Wheeler, who received a monetary judgement in response to his arrest at the event last year.
Some students lurked under the covered walkways watching the event, which paled compared to last year's turnout. A few drummers were joined by a bluesy trumptet and then eventually, a saxaphone. |
